Insight from a Titans fan
My mate in Worongary is a Gold Coast fanatic. He says they see Prince as some kind of a god down there. To many he is the Titans, The captain, the "go to player" a foundation player as they call them as one of the first they brought in after formation. He's also the media face of Titans, he likens him to a Beckham type personality, seems crazy here I know to hear that, but over there as you may well know the NRL has coverage almost at our Premier League levels. Their marketing deals with Nike, Adidas etc are as big if not bigger than the pay deals over here. Granted that is for a certain elite but Scotty is in that elite group as the media face of the Titans with the image of sporting saint.
He says the parting is simply a matter of planning ahead, says they have probably no more than 2 seasons of Prince delivering the goods in the NRL. However he still finished the season as one of the form 7s in the comp.
They are looking for a 7 who can give Titans 6 years service minimum. So Princie's time is in wind-down and they simply need a replacement for the long term good of the club. Their move for Cronk was a real blow to Scotty and hurt him bad.
But my mate says he's not going to get any better, yet its difficult for the GCT supporters to accept life without him as the vast majority see him as their best and most influential player on the rosta even at age 32. There was a recent official Titans poll which shows that too.
People there are resigned now to him leaving and are just waiting an announcement. After all that has been said he feels the relationship is now untenable. Mrs Prince is not keen on Sydney so even if he was 26 and not 32 they would not be keen on going there. Melbourne is a closed shop. as is NQ of course. Brisbane is a no goer as the Broncoes and Titans are bit like us and Rovers. Bronco's fans have real problems with Prince. Would Lee Crooks have gone to Rovers ? its that kind of scenario. There were rumours of a St George approach following the Titans Cronk approach but it was on much less money on account of his age, but it was interesting as it included some coaching, anyway nothing came of it. 2 seasons ago he had a market value out there and could have moved within the NRL but would have only have got a 2 year deal and would have been in the same position as he is now. So he was as well staying on Gold Coast Paradise.
For today, even as a top player NRL teams wont take a punt when almost all have a wealth of talent coming through. Ironically the only team that do not are the Titans. So they are struggling with a replacement 7 of any real experience, and their 6, although highly rated is a bit of a Rookie and is needing a guiding hand at 7. So they expect to be rudderless for a season which they are panicking about and thus they are writing next season off already. (Makes me laugh....one season !! how long have we been rudderless at 7 ? )
All of this is from one fanatical Titans supporter so its just an insight. As we know from our own forum there are 360 deg of views on the same issue so make of this what you will. It doesn't get us any nearer a decision. On that one they too are expecting a decision at Robina by Wednesday this week latest, but we know that already.
