One word that you've more or less mentioned - Professionalism. How many lads have gone from 16-18 year olds with the world at their feet to complete no marks by the time they're 21. Gear gets hold of a few, a few can't control their temper and end up inside and some end up on the booze. I've seen players with a lot more talent than those playing now not make it.

I see your point, but at open age there's always the argument that Hull's remoteness boosts the amateur teams. Don't quite make it at Leeds, Wakefield or Cas - You might give it a go part-time at relatively nearby Dewsbury, Hunslet or Batley. Bit more of a PITA getting there or York or Doncaster from Hull (I know some do it) after work, so Dockers or West Hull is more attractive.

We might be up there with anyone in terms of participation but your comparison is kind of with everyone. There'll be a lot more 14 year olds playing RL in Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford, Wakefield, Castleford, Keighly and Cumbria [ucombined[/u than in Hull and district alone, I'm certain.

Maybe that we have two pro teams is the unusual thing and means we have to be net importers of talent?
