Although there was the suggestion that he had offered to see the season out, maybe we've paid him that. If so, I don't know why wouldn't have wanted him to stay.

It's the Australian press. They've most likely just assumed he's had a payout without bothering to check. I really can't see the club paying him anything above his airfare home given that he asked to leave.
