Quote: Uppo58 "Has to be Harold Bowman and Mick Scott by a distance.

Very unlucky for Trevor Skerrett, less so for other top props,
Charlie Stone, Vince Farrar, Keith Tindall, Andy Dannatt, Karl Harrison, Jim Macklin, Terry Kirchin, Paul King, Dave Brooks & Paul Rose.'"

This, Bowman and Scott for me too with a close third and fourth to Mick Harrison and Trevor Skerrett. Whilst Skerret was an outstanding player and great tackler for Trinity and his first couple of seasons at Hull, his style after his knees going to pot meant going forward he used to pull up with a funny step just before impact on being tackled almost every time reducing his effectiveness (IMO) and frankly he was done after the 82/83 season spending more than half the next 3 seasons on the injury list. Quality player and deservedly so, gave his all every time but for me not in the top two of Hull props.

Other Hull props of the past worthy of a mention are:

Frank Boylen; the first ever dual code international in RL playing for England RU in their first 4 matches of 1908 and after only 11 months and 30 games for Hull, at the ripe old age of 30 he was chosen for the Gt.Britain squad to tour down under becoming our first GB touring international (& also the first to be sent off in a tour match!!) Made just the one GB appearance in the first test, played also for England and Yorkshire.

Tom Herridge 1907-1921; one of the most imposing men & looks hard as nails in the photos and was. Signed from York RU he played an integral part of our early Challenge cup final teams including the 1914 success (4 CC finals and two losing Yorkshire cups). Made 375 appearances scoring 44 tries and would have made a hatful more were it not for WWI.

John 'johnno' Beasty, 1912/13- 1926/7.
Local lad, signed up to alleviate a schedule pile up and his first match was the Christmas day derby of 1912, ended up playing 283 games and considering 4 mssed years due to WWI would have being a member of the 400 club. Solid and dependable one

I think Harold Bowman should be a certainty. I'd agree with others regarding Mick Scott and Jim Drake. I'm also surprised that Mickey Paea's name hasn't been mentioned, although I can understand that as he has been with us for such a short time. Certainly a part of the team that has many worthy nominations.

My nominations would go to
Mick Harrison
Vince Farrar
Trevor Skerrett
Charlie Stone
Karl Harrison
Mark O'Meley

As others have said honourable mentions go to Dannatt, King, Tindall. Although neither was a great player I think one of the most effective pairings at prop we have had were Carvell and Dowes. They seemed to be there week after week doing the hard groundwork for others. I would love it if we had a pair of props at the moment who could put in as many minutes as consistently as they did. Unfortunately one such prop we got rid of is still playing elsewhere, Andy Lynch.

I think one of the features of good props is that you tend not to notice them until they are not there. It is only when they are substituted or unavailable you realise just how much work they do. One I particularly remember in this respect is Craig Greenhill.

I feel guilty for saying that one of the things I remember most about Andy Dannatt was him breaking Ellery Hanley's jaw in a game against Leeds at the Boulevard. Hanley had lost a lot of his speed but used his incredible understanding of the game to often be in front of their ball carrier ready for an offload. Dannatt got fed up of him being in the way and cracked him off the ball. He was sent off. I cannot remember if we lost - probably - but at the time he got a big cheer.

I remember when Dannatt came back to the Boulevard with Saints for the first time I've never seen so many players tackle one man.I was half expecting the coaching staff to join in too icon_biggrin.gif

Stone & Tindall were great servants for the club , Skerrett played in an era that was great for the club , Some great tough forwards around then in that time . Harrison later was another when we had a very good pack under Brian Smith .

Another from the Power Pack of the fifties who should be considered is Bob Coverdale. He played with Mick Scott and Jim Drake and all three played for England.

Bob was a specialist blind side prop who played from 1951- 57 and he missed out on a Premiership win through injury and played in 3 losing Yorkshire Cup finals.

Greenhill, he was a decent prop, good go forward and solid defence.

Craig "Knuckles" is the best front row forward I have seen play for Hull FC, and possibly the toughest too. He never took a backward step, and had great defence...and kicked the odd goal...

I'll never ever forget when he leathered Barry Ward from St Helens.
