Quote: knockersbumpMKII "Aside from Sterling whom I think is the stand out talent wise by far we've being a bit sp for top top scrums halves.

Billy Anderson 216 games, 16 tries.
At only 5ft 6 and 11 stone he was considered to be a hard, wily bundle of energy, your typical 'old fashioned' scrum half.
Took us to 4, yes that's right 4 CC finals, 1907/08, 08/09, 09/10 (all losing) and then finally winning the big one in 1913/14. Missed out on rep honours despite shining in the trials for the 1910 tour down under. Playing 6 seasons over two stints with us & a couple of seasons at Batly he had just one game after the war.

Eddie Caswell, 401 app, 98 tries, 5 goals. One of the very few in the '400' club. Formed a great partnership with Stan Whittey in the 20s as well as playing off half for a fair few of his games.
he was another robust, speedy and crafty half that helped the great 2nd rower Bob Taylor to run in plenty of his tries as well as amass almost a century for himself. Missed out on international duty due to the likes of the great Jonty Parkin but rep'd for Wales 3 times. Won the championship in 20/21, Yorkshire Cup in 23/24 along with 2 CC final losses and 2 yorks cup final losses.

Tommy Finn, 375 apps, 132 tries, 1 goal. Originally spending 4 seasons at St.Helens with only 8 appearances his 11 seasons co-incided with one of Hull's greatest ever periods from the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Though not considered a 'great' he formed a brilliant partnership with JW and worked his magic especially down the blind side and ensured our 'Panzer' pack did its job. A prolific try scorer & brilliant support player scored the vital winning try in the 1956 championship final at Maine Rd and our only try in the defeat by Wigan in the '59 CC final. No rep honours but won 2 Championship medals and 1 losers, 2 losing CC medals and 2 losing Yorkshire cup medals

Honourable mentions to Chris Davidson and Kenny Foulkes, two top club men.'"

Preceding Tommy Finn was one of the best ankle tacklers I have ever seen play the game - Albert Tripp. Hardly anyone escaped his faultless technique and he played from the early fifties until the mid-fifties.

Quote: Erik the not red "I'm struggling with this one. Sterling is obviously the best I've seen but 34 games over a season and a half doesn't win any long service awards. Typically for Hull's history with half backs its hard to find anyone with the combination of brilliance where they are recognised as among the best of their contemporaries (eg winning representative honours) and having a substantial number of appearances for Hull. Both Dean and Harkin for example didn't make 100 appearances for Hull, or get rep honours for that matter.'"

I first saw Sterling here in Aus in the 70's playing in televised schoolboy football where his obvious talent was on display leading to his stellar career at Paramatta and the subsequent International honours. Came over in 1985 for the Cup Final to see him play for Hull and noted how idolised he was by the Hull supporters. It is no surprise that he is seen by many as the best scrum half to play for Hull. With his limited games for Hull though, should he be part of the greatest team of the past 150 years?

He played for us therefore he should be considered because for me ge was the best. Showed my lad a video(yes that's right a video) of him and he couldn't believe just how good he was. I'd want to mention Dean as well. A real competitor . Estat also gave his best for us but for me right on top of the pile was Sterling. You hear him on Channel nine and he still has affection for the club.

If he hasn't played enough games for us........ I'm flying him back until he has. On our current showing, he could still do a job for us!

My favourite scrum half was Aussie Duncan Jackson who preceded Albert Tripp and played from 1947 with his 2 Aus compatriots, international hooker George Watt and flying winger Bruce Ryan.
Jackson formed a solid ball winning combination with Watt and a great try scoring combination with Ryan with some tries being scored directly from scrum wins deep in the Hull half with a pass from Jackson opening up the defense and Ryan sprinting clear.

Peter Sterling is my choice. Great player. Probably the third best half back ever to play for Australia (behind Andrew Johns and Johnathan Thurston). Sterlo still speaks fondly of Hull FC on Australian television.

The great French half Patrick Entat, from Avignon, would have to be the second choice.

Not old enough to have seen Sterling play, but from what I can gather he was a special player.

The best 7 I have seen play for Hull is Casper...Tony Smith, followed by Richard Horne at his best...

My me, it would be

Entat (Criminal he was not kept on)

Outside that Tony Smith or Hasler.

I would never class Horne as a 7.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proudly proclaiming `Wow, what a ride`:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_60404.png

Peter Sterling had it all. The greatest no 7 I have seen in this country.

Could you tell me when Johns and Thurston ever feed a scrum, got a penalty from making the oppositions hooker strike early,
Think answer is no,they don't know how to feed all in second row now, uncontested scums no skill required .
No ball in face of opposing hooker,no quick feed because your hookers faster at striking.

Those who never show Chris Davidson play, was behind a weak pack at the time never got rep honours though think might of got in Yorkshire side?
Was as Wigan who chased him for 2/3 seasons called him our seventh forward, if he'd gone there would of been in GB team IMHO

OK here are the preliminary nominees for the position of scrumhalf. please make it be known if you would like to alter this line up making a good case for inclusion/exclusion

1. Eddie Caswell. The lynch pin of the 1920s FC team, Caswell signed in 1920 from Cardiff RU. The Welshman as the 1964 centenary programme stated was "Short but powerfully built and was one of the brainiest scrum halves in the game". In a career for hull lasting until 1928 he made 401 appearances scoring 98 tries and formed a formidable partnership with Stan Whitty. He won both the championship and yorkshire cup and appeared in 4 other finals.

2. Tony Dean. Pontefract born Dean signed for Hull from Hunslet in 1980 and quickly became a key member of the great 80s side. He played in the 1982 challenge cup final replay win at elland road and was a division one title winner a year later, also tasting victory in the yorkshire cup final. He started 56 games for Hull, scoring 14 tries and 9 drop goals. Played a crucial role in the 1982 john player trophy derby win, dropping a goal. Passed away after a long illness in his home town in 2014.

3. Kevin Harkin. One of many notable players to sign for Hull from York over the years, Harkin shared the scrum Half role with Dean in an era long before squad rotation became fashionable. A master of the pure scrum half roll when scrums were contested Harkin had a great understanding with hooker Keith Bridges winning much possession for hull in crucial games. Harkin played in the challenge cup finals of 1982 and 1983 and was controversially injured in the latter game taking away hull's ability to win possession for a large chunk of the game.

4. Peter Sterling. A member of the all conquering kangaroos team of 1982 sterling made his first appearance for hull in the 1983/4 season, playing a .short 8 match stint. He returned the next season for a further 30 games, guiding hull to a yorkshire cup win and appearances in the john player trophy and challenge cup finals, the latter regarded as the greatest ever cup final. the Eels legend was an inspiration to his team mates and as well as his ability to create chances he was an excellent kicker of the football and possessed one of the sharpest rugby brains around. Played 38 games scoring 9 tries.

5. Patrick Entat. Entat signed for Hull form french side Avignon in 1990 and quickly established a partnership with Greg Mackey. Under the coaching of Brian smith Entat guided hull to a top 4 finish in 1991, after leading the league for much of the season. Played a key role in Hull's premiership trophy win in the same year. Played 34 times for france.

In a break from tradition i would like to argue for the inclusion of tommy finn. signed in 1954 finn played 375 times for hull scoring 132 tries and won 2 championships, also appearing in 4 major finals. was a key member of the late 50s to early 60s team. i was very close to putting him straight in but felt the overall vibe of the thread was the 5 players above. question is who to leave out?

Only watched since 1980, but it's Sterling, Sterling, Sterling for me.

Feel sorry for those stalwarts from the early years, no-one to stand their corner. We'll never know the true reality, that's a bit sad really icon_sad.gif .
