Is it me or is shaul the most hyped kid in yrs. Not knocking him, certainly looks good albeit against a poor wakey side on a low key Easter Monday game n a lower league team. We definitely need him signed up but at the cost of one of the season's best performers?
How good is shaul under a high ball at super league level, putting others away at super league level, directing defences at super league level,1 on1 defence at super league level.
People need to calm down a bit, because could be setting the kid for a fall, I'd think if he was as absolutely ready as some suggest he wouldn't have been playing for skirlaugh not much more than a yr ago.
Wigan contrary to some people's beliefs didn't throw their youngsters all in at the same time. They phased them in under the wings of the outgoing players n when reasonable opportunities arose. Not just luck n hope the kids come good.
The very biggest sticking point is this ridiculous situation with having no means of playing players if over 20 if you can't get them paired up with another team.!!'"
Don't think he's anywhere near as over hyped as McDonnell. I don't think Shaul is better better option yet, but I think he has far more potential, and it's up to us to harness that.

Why not convert him back to scrum half - great acceleration off the mark and good hands
Look at Lomax, Tomkins, Hohia who can all play in the halves and fullback'"
Saints fans don't seem to think so judging by their board.

| Hoahia is an International half back is he not? Though his defence left a lot to be desired against the Dobbins on Saturday.
As for Shaul. As good as Mcdonnell has been i can see him missing almost as many games as he plays. Just seems to pick up the odd injury.
Therefore, Shaul MUST be signed up.

| I personally think that the likelihood of him leaving is being blown out of proportion. It seems that the most negative rumours/situations are always the ones to be given most credence, but if you look at this situation calmly I really don't see why it would be in Shaul's best interests to leave us at this moment in time. I still don't see many (if any) other SL clubs where he's that much more likely to get a regular game barring injuries.

I'd actually say McDonnal is still under hyped. For all the scepticism he faced before season start he's been among the best in most games he's played and some of them poor team performances. Think we can get great value out of Shannon whilst bringing shaul on till it's time for him to take over. Like I've said though the reserves situation n duel registration is the big thing. If he isn't playing 1st team need a means of him playing (wonder if saints want him for a couple of weeks)

Horne is an international winger, it's not always a great indicator of where a player is suited to play as well as times/situations also changing.

The reality is that we don't know whether he's thinking of leaving or not so like most stuff on here it's pure speculation.
As someone else has asked already, are we over-hyping Shaul? Great game against Wakey and Crusaders but there's bigger and better opposition out there so we don't know how good he really is yet. For me he is one that still needs developing. I hope that development continues with us.

You cant win with some people can you, we have been desperate for a FB like Mcdonnell since Prescott, he makes loads of metres, excellent positioning, very safe under the high ball, breaks the tackle and is good and linking in with the line. Even his one on one defence which was critisded by Rovers fans seems good.
Shaul has potential, but has yet to be tested and is quiet far behind Mcdonnell in his ability, hopefully we can keep Shaul and he can learn of Mcdonnell who so far has been an excellent signing for Hull.

| No doubt for me that Shannon is first choice and should be back against Wigan. Shaul has been impressive but still has a lot to learn and is excellent cover for injuries. I certainly don't want to lose him and where he will get games is a worry. Hopefully we can get him to sign a deal and have him competing for a first team sport regularly next season.
The problem (a nice one) is that McDonnell is playing well and is still young himself and under contract next season.

| Gentle likes to have 4 forwards on the bench. Would personally like to see Shaul on the bench. He seems have that burst of speed and good footwork that could trouble defences. We haven't got the blockbusting forward to change the game, maybe Shaul could have that impact but in a different way.

Who would you bring off for him? Complete waste of a bench spot

Agreed, Shaul is not ready to be a first choice fullback yet. McDonnell has been one of our best players so far this season and if he is fit, he plays - unless of course he has a drop in form.
It's not an ideal situation with the u19 rules but I imagine we are not the only team with this problem.

| I'd have shaul come on as a loose man in all honesty. Obv's not run the ball up but possibly have him with ball in hand in the middle of the park with his speed.
But that's my opinion.

| the real problem here is the way the rfl have set the structure up. they need to ditch dual reg whilst keeping a reasonable loan option open to championship clubs. the main attention needs to be on the reserve grade which must change to accommodate players such as shaul, by one of the following methods
1. an open age reserve league like football
2. an u23 competition
3. dispensation to play a limited number of over age players
i think option 1 would not see a glut of older players in the reserve league, like in the past, as the salary cap has reduced the amount of older players across the squads as a whole, but would enable players in their early 20s to continue their development. if the rfl do nothing there is a real danger the nrl or union will come in and cherry pick some of our potential best players as 'projects'
i wouldn't mind betting just about every superleague team has a player in it in a similar position to shaul - these players need to play games not just train
