| Pretty amusing how some people seem to think a coach who took us to 2nd and a grand final then 4th and a playoff win is somehow worse than a guy who has served up unadulterated dross for nearly 4 years now. Makes you realise how effective the club's spin machine is on certain types of people.

It is amazing. Sharp let himself down with some recruitment such as Maiava and Byrne, but he deserved a longer run in 2008 given what had happened in 2006 and then 2007 despite losing Cooke through no fault of his own. Looking at some at the results under him in 2008 - 29-30 at Saints, 10-11 at Rovers, 28-28 at Catalans he was unlucky.

| It's quite simple really, it's Brian Smith. He gave us a taste of what it could be like and so now the mediocrity hurts so much more. As James say in sit down; "if I hadn't seem such riches I could live with being poor"
So there you go. Worst. Coach. Ever.

If the thread was "which coach did FC most damage" then Smith would win hands down, he nearly cost us the club we all love, and we ended up with Cleal in charge too!

| I remember the game when casey ripped the players shirts off their backs in the changing room after the game. Can see agar doing the same kind of thing if we don't beat wire at home

what do you mean IF?
I honestly think some players have decided it doesn't matter what they do, Agar hasn't got the spine to drop them.

Seriously though, on a purely coaching point of view, Smithy certainly knew what he was doing. But this is a "worst of" thread so I won't derail it any more for Jake. So, Agar!

| Casey and its not even close. Time has probably helped some people forget how bad he was and some forum members are (fortunately for them) too young to have suffered when he was there. Apart from being an incompetent and clueless coach with no game plan at all (5 drives and a kick would have been too sophisticated for him) he made some truly awful signings, Mick Gibbins, Terry Manning FFS old never were's. Add to that publicly slagging off his team in the local rag and you have your worst nightmare - a clueless, unpleasant moron.
He did far more damage to Hull prospects during his coaching reign than he ever did as a dobbins player.

Sharp was punished for a bad half season when prior to that things had been pretty good under him, as you point out he had some pretty strong mitigating factors - where was the club's formidable spin machine then?
The widely accepted story goes that after Kath sacked Sharp she had an epiphany that hiring and firing coaches wasn't the way to go, so the next man she put in charge was going to get all the time and support she could possibly offer, and it's simply unfortunate that that man turned out to be Rich Agar. IMO that gives Kath way too much credit, Agar is Kath's golden boy and the job was always going to be his when he wanted it (remember him saying he 'wasn't ready yet' before we got Sharp in?). Sharp was effectively a caretaker holding the fort until Agar felt he was ready to step up, as soon as she had an excuse she gave him the boot and once Agar was installed he was always going to be playing to a completely different set of rules.

If you are not part of the solution then you are more likely part of the problem...: |

Snap! Started going in 1979 and the only period I have not attended home games at least was during the Len Casey reign. My dad used to bring me back a match day program every game during this time in a hope to keep me interested but it wasnt until Brian Smith took over that I was back with him stood at the scoreboard end at the Boulevard.
