There's a memorial to Hull pals near Oppy, I must have cycled very close to it almost 20 years ago when I toured round France. Wish I had known it was there at the time. I'm hoping to cycle over to France again this year so hope to pop over and pay my respects.
I've cycled past so many cemetaries & memorials in France especially in the Somme Bay area & it's difficult to comprehend the number of lives lost even just going by the amount of gravestones.
Jack was a true hero like all those before & after him who have served their country in conflicts in any capacity, the fact he was a great sportman too made him a king amongst men.
I was very honoured to be part of the whole Jack Harrison VC MC fund raising effort. I was humbled to see fans from every section, club and country of this great game donating funds to the only player to be awarded the countries highest military medal.
Having read about his life and how like so many back then he found himself fighting in the trenches of the Western Front. He did not shrink from his duty and like so many before and since he is remembered with pride.
