Well for a start , they are not illegal drugs. They are banned substances in sporting competitions(alcohol is even on certain lists)
The banned list includes pseudoephedrine, glycerol and salbutomol, which are all regualry found in day to day medicines.
Even caffeine is part of the monitoring program.
In fact id like to refer you to an article i read on the matter this week, esp these paragraphs
Quote kathy kirk[iFurther issues surrounding the use of OTC stimulants by athletes
As part of the Monitoring Programme, since 2004, caffeine remains a unique case. Whilst it is a constituent of numerous OTC medications, it is clearly a socially acceptable drug, consumed in large amounts in the diet via the intake of caffeinated beverages such as coffee. With the recent growth in café culture, caffeine intake throughout the UK population would appear to have increased significantly. Caffeine also has renowned ergogenic properties and since its removal from the Prohibited List has become a common constituent of sport-specific supplements such as sports drinks and gels etc. It would appear that despite the clear performance enhancing properties, caffeine’s relative safety and its widespread availability makes it a difficult substance to control. Indeed, the effects of caffeine have been demonstrated at relatively low doses, making the possibility of differentiating between therapeutic or acceptable social use, from its use for performance enhancement or simply over consumption, via urinalysis impossible. This, coupled with the fact that caffeine is used as an acceptable performance enhancer within many working situations (e.g. as a cognitive enhancer during study), makes it difficult to legislate against in sport.
There are a large number of products available for weight reduction, combating drowsiness, relieving fatigue and enhancing sports performance, all containing a variety of herbal stimulants. Herbal stimulants are those from plants or plant extracts that may be categorised according to the agents that they contain. Typically, herbal stimulants contain caffeine and related methylxanthines, of which the most common are coffee and tea. Herbal stimulants may also contain ephedrine and related sympathomimetics. Herbs may however, contain many active ingredients and the exact quantities and contents are seldom labelled. Whilst herbal products contain active ingredients, they are classified as food supplements rather than drugs and they undergo less stringent quality control procedures prior to their sale. Most herbal supplements have not been subject to extensive scientific scrutiny and rigorous clinical trials. This poses a significant problem in terms of the safety of herbal supplement use. The major risks of taking herbal supplements include the purity of the ingredients and the possibility of contamination, via possible interactions between the ingredients and other supplements consumed simultaneously. [uAthletes should therefore exercise extreme caution when contemplating the use of natural/herbal supplements[/u.[/i'"

| He took slimming pills . They are hardly performance enhancing! As has been stated , they were not illegal.
The major thing here is the cover up by Rule . That was the stupid thing .
As for people hating Hull FC , who cares ! Bring on 2012 and lets do our talking on the pitch ! The potential is now in place for Hull FC to become one of , if not the biggest Club in SL.
Lets all get behind Adam, Shaun, Peter and all the players and show that the Black and White Nation is about to wake up!
OLD FAITHFUL......

| As a Warrington and RL supporter, I'm not overly fussed about the Gleeson thing. I knew Hull were setting themselves up to come a cropper when they signed him, especially with Long already in situ. Still, as has been said, while the situation was handled spectacularly badly the original offence is not something to go mad over.
Having said that, I've been a regular reader of the Hull FC forum as a casual probably since the end of 2006 when Rovers got promoted. I can say, hand on heart, that I've been repeatedly drawn back because from that point on, your club has been a stream of ceaseless hilarity. At the beginning of that period, you were one of the most exciting lights in the game - top facilities, loads of money, big passionate crowds, a trophy the year before and every chance of challenging for honours for the foreseeable.
Then came Rovers, the Cooke Affair and a bottomless pit of embarrassment. I don't know whether Rovers themselves were the catalyst, but bad decision followed bad decision, clapped-out Aussie stars joined clapped-out English never-has-beens - and that was just the on-field disasters. The appointment and subsequent support of Agar by the board, Thackray, Reardon, Crocker, the ever self-promoting Rule.. that's just off the top of my head.
As entertaining as it's been, it's about time Hull FC started a new era of realising their potential with Mr Pearson at the helm. The signings for this coming season aren't a promising start, but hopefully I'll be wrong. I do wish the club all the best, as you are one of our biggest and most historic, but not in the first game

I really don't think your lot are in a position to judge. If and when Gleeson plays another rugby league game again you can rest assure that there won't be any Hull FC fans there to cheer him on and wish him well because he left without "saying goodbye" to the fans.

Good post.
I agree that from 2007 onwards the club went from being a SL side with the potentially to permanenently break in to the top4, to an off-field soap opera.
Our signings for next season were affected by most of the signings being made by Agar/The old board before they left, and also the exchange rate/tax rules meaning big name stars aren't eager to come over.
cruicially however, some of our gamble/average signings for next season like Aspinwall and Martin are on 1 year deals.
I would expect Gentle to give the squad a major overhaul in 2013.
Next year I would be happy to see progress on the field, with more attractive rugby being played and the beleif back that 'on our day' we can beat a top side.

| It's easy to say slimming pills aren't performance enhancing, but if there taken to lose weight to enhance your performance I'm guessing they can be afterall.

| I can't wait for the season to start. 2012 is about re-establishing some pride back in the club and having a competitive year. We won't win anything but hopefully we will take our first steps towards success.
