Modern RL is a 17 man game. If you're taking a game seriously, you pick four players on your bench that will come on and contribute to the overall success of the team. You have a game plan that includes when and where you'll utilise your bench players for maximum effect. To say 'we can beat this lot with only 15 men, so I'll put a couple of guys in for a confidence-building run out' is indicative of all that has been wrong with our club for the last several years. Difficult call on Crooks. To often though players in Hull, both FC and KR, have had a break through season and then drifted into mediocrity. Is it something to do with mental attitude, thinking they are something better than they really are. Do we as fans big these players up to much in the gold fish bowl that is Hull RL. They then coast for two or three seasons living with a celebrity status, at which point the game has passed them by and they are average pro or even semi-pro players. |

I can see what you're saying with this. I would also like to say that it is probably also to do with how coaches handle these players after that breakthrough season. Do they maybe put too much pressure on them? "You had a great first season so I expect you to be even better this season."
It's far too early for people to be writing off Crooks though. Players have dips in form and can bounce back. Maybe he was more suited to Gentle's tactics and training methods and hasn't adapted as yet to Radders methods? |

Maybe be a coaching issue, but it does seem a particular problem in Hull and with a number of different coaches at both FC and KR. |

I wonder if that's maybe to do with the current status of the two clubs. It's perhaps easier for a successful team like say Wigan to bring youngsters in and nurture them over time whereas there's more pressure at FC and KR that they be an instant and consistent success once they make the breakthrough. |

I personally don't ever think Crooks was that good. He just had a very lucky first season where everything him and Lineham touched turned to gold. You could see him absolutely ting himself at Wembley and somebody should of helped him but they never did and now I think he even doubts himself so he's lost that edge that was in effect his good luck and is now just bang average. |
