Just looking at some stats for the game and it would seem lack of possession killed us. Saints had 231 carries to our 171, and as a result they made 300 metres more than us. However our avarage metres per carry was better than theirs and we made 6 breaks to 4 which is encouraging. We've got to start getting a fair share of the ball if we are going to beat these top sides though.

Losing ball on 1st tackle 3 times doesn't help

That's what I mean. We will get away with unforced errors and penalties and against lesser teams, but we've got to cut it out if we've got aspiration of top 5. The good thing is that despite the errors we competed pretty well.

Very much agree with this. Encouraging signs, the acid test will be how quickly we address the errors and discipline to get fair share of ball.

“We will not accept a top eight finish as a barometer of supposed success at any point in the future whilst I am the owner of this club. Thats why you got the Bullet Agar...Adam Pearson wants winners...not useless gits like you. "Rugby League is a simple game played by simple people. Rugby Union is a complex game played by wankers." L.Daley 2005:

Going off from people who wen off here and I know, the general thing is that indiscipline is costing us and defence isn't as good as last season but attack has improved. The team is still gelling and getting used to Radfords coaching. The other good thing is that Radford isn't afraid to critise players.

That was the story of last season. Poor ball control, poor discipline and poor last tackle plays

What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?:38546.gif

I actually went to the game on Friday. First 40mins Hull's forwards really took it to Saints and were deserving of their lead. I think a lack of killer instinct cost Hull in the end. Poor last tackle options (e.g Houghton hoofing the ball well dead on one of Hull's only good ball sets in the second half) magnified the lack of possession. When you add to this the fact that Saints having most possession meant that Roby could get the wheels in motion down the middle, you were always going to be struggling in the second 40.

Needs to be careful on this and strike the right balance of public criticism and praise.

And the ridiculous pass he chucked out after Horne kicked us 40M down the field to the St's 10M line from the penalty given, the second half was a mare for Houghton. Think the loss of Carvell also made a big difference to us in the 2nd half. A game we could and should have won had we not switched off at the start of the 2nd half and given away daft penalities. All in all even though we got beat I saw enough signs that we have a pretty good side the big question is can Radford & Last succeed in getting them to cut out the errors and improve discipline?

Just saw the game back on FC live. Some good stuff - Westerman in the first half, Whiting and Horne were all good and Paea was excellent. Shame Silverwood found a forward pass against us when the pass went backwards at 16-10 down I think it was that was an opportunity that went against us thanks to the popular side shouting the decision. Thought our discipline was pretty good overall certainly better than against Catalans. The sort of game that can go away from you when playing away from home - at the KC it might well have been different. Houghton needs to improve 50% at least with the ball I thought he was sloppy. Hope Ellis is OK didn't realise he'd limped out of the game near the end.

Twitter - @MaddyHFC:

I thought we played pretty well first half, controlled the game and made good yards. With the ball we were dangerous and they created very little which was largely due to the fact they had no territory.

Second half we started giving away penalties and we turned over cheap ball in our own half too often which give them a way into the game. Once they got on top we were never going to reverse that.

Main concern is not being able to defend our line, most times a try is scored. Plus the missed tackles are an issue, penalties don't help.

Ellis was good, Horne played well and Paea & Westerman were the standouts.

The last couple of seasons our goal line defence was excellent; I would have backed us to keep out almost anyone at short range. This year our defence generally is nowhere near as good. Over 30 points conceded in each of our opening two games says it all.
