I went to get some tickets for the game this morning and the park and ride and market where still on.
The road is closed from just after where the car park ends so all the car park will be open but you might not be able to get to it from the Anlaby Road end of Walton Street. They were already working on fixing it so it might be all open again by Sunday.
Also there was no sign of water in West Park either.

Quote: Standee "I hope you haven't got the road conditions we have here in Mansfield, it's rained on snow and is still -1 degrees, just spoken to a friend who works on 999 despatch and they're reluctant to even send the emergency services into our area, go to love Local Authority Highways departments eh!'"

Do you ever stop bashing local/national government at any opportunity?

What do you want them to do, have a dedicated Standee gritter hanging around, just in case?

If I pay for something I expect to receive it, it's not hard to grasp.

If you had your way we'd pay 80% tax for sod all services.

I'd like to see the "Standee gritting precept" on your council tax bill.

No doubt if your local council had been spending £100k per annum for the last 20 years on salt that was not needed and went to waste, you'd be complaining about that too.

Quite possibly your local council may not share your perception of your own importance, it may come as a shock but it's a very real possibility.

BTW have you actually contacted your council's highways department?

Are you sure it is actually the responsibility of the council and not national Highways?

I am well aware that it is their responsibility, I gave up with the Head of Service some time ago when he kept trolling out the standard line, I have a meeting with the head of both the district and county council scheduled tomorrow.

It may come as a shock to you cod'ead, but I know how LA's work, I know how important 1300 voters are to those in power, I also know my rights as a council tax payer.

Maybe he just wants them to operate efficiently, deliver service and offer value for the huge amount of money they cost us

I know someone who used to work on the bins in Hull. He said they used to pay them overtime on a Saturday to empty the bins they'd missed during the week and than he was usually home by 1.30pm every day

that is still true, it's why it's usually the bin men that call Unison out on strike for a 2% pay rise, they get overtime at the weekends to make up for lost time, mean time the office workers lose pension contributions and pay.

I'm not going to comment on the specifics of Standees case as I don't have any details. On the more general point, however, would you consider it efficient and good value for money if councils invested in equipment and salt stock that would only be required once every 30 years?

I'd be happy if the salt/grit was used effectively and not just dumped in a pile on certain parts of the road/pavement.

Some of the pavements in Sheffield are a nightmare yet parts of them have the best part of half a tonne of grit on them in the space of a few metres.

Would you consider it efficient to be the only road in the locality to not be gritted, to have seen a number of accidents and have to push an ambulance up a hill with someone's dying son in it?

No, thought not.

Obviously not, however I don't think snow is a once in 30 year occurrence is it? We have the same problems every year when it snows. If they stopped wasting money everywhere else then they'd have plenty of money to spend on salt. Why can't other council vehicles be adapted to operate as gritting wagons and snow ploughs?

Hopefully the next round of spending cuts will see a move towards more commercial delivery of government services.

As long as there isn't a "commercial" approach to how it's all funded. We'll all be skint while the council leaders quaff champers icon_biggrin.gif

I specifically stated that I wasn't commenting on your particular case as I didn't have any details. Did you miss that part of my post? It was right at the start and everything. icon_rolleyes.gif
