We never got out of neutral
A manful defensive effort in the heat and with reduced interchanges, the disruption of losing a winger in the 2nd minute and houghton early on which was our biggest problem as it loses us a key defender, options out of dummy half and organisation of our attack.
No major dramas on the loss which would have been the same in sydney or wigan but I just hope (pray) we don;t lose houghton for an extended period as we were utter gash without him for 2 months last year.
wigan scored a couple of tries off the back of us losing our winger before we sorted our edge defence and a couple of barge overs but we handled them really well other than that with washbrook and particularly connor doing a great job defending our right.. Too many errors with the ball for us to really mount any realistic fightback in the 2nd half.
I thought griffin was excellent in defence and attack - we really need to find a way of getting him quality early ball, connor did a great defensive job after the first 2 tries, particularly as he could barely run later on in the game and sika manu was an absolute beast who looked like he was playing for an NRL contract.
Plenty of effort all round and not a major disappointment we lost given the disruption we had

| Very disappointing. Very poor performance.
The injuries didn’t help , but not an excuse .
Wigan, quicker and slicker than us .
Our attack with ball in hand is a concern, movement is terrible.

Is Hodgson the new Griffin, or is it all about pace?: |
|
| Losing a winger in the first minute is probably the worst thing that could have happened. It was never going to be easy to re-organise.
If Carlos had been fit then I'm sure the bench would have coped much better.

| Can't understand some of the doom & gloom to be honest. Whilst I'm disappointed we lost you can't fault the effort and in those conditions with two players off early doors and two or three having knocks and playing on.
Watts looked like a player taking part in his first game which you expect. Unfortunately the injuries early and conditions cost us but we didn't get blown away. Some good individual performances and a couple of players who should have done better.
On to Cas and put things right.

I thought the talanoa try was one of the best worked moves we've put on in a long time but agree overall that the ball movement was ponderous but I think that was more a result of fatigue and houghton going off. We looked pretty good early on and were making metres for fun until he went off. 2 interchanges down in that heat was always going to tell and wigan had the lions share of possession so we had a lot of defending to do.
I personally think radford got things wrong after faraimo went off and we'd have been better moving griffin to the right wing and leaving connor in the centre. It would still have given us plenty of go forward on kick returns and would have been a better defensive fit plus griffin is quicker

| Very disappointing but understandable with injuries and limited interchange options. Did well to keep score down. I thought the forwards were OK but obviously tired. Manu, Hadley & Mini deserve particular praise. Half backs very poor Sneyd went missing for most of the game and if that was Kelly playing to impress the Aussie clubs I think we will be keeping him next year. Griffin showed up well in attack and defense and seems to have turned a corner.

Correct.
Losing an away game to one of SL's main protagonists and favourites for this year's comp is far from disastrous.

I agree. After 12 minutes I was expecting a complete blow out. In the conditions and with the reduced interchanges it was one of our best defensive displays in recent years

It wasnt really was it - Wigan were guilty of making a few daft decisions which saved a whitewash. They could of scored another five if theyed made the right decisions or had a bit more luck. We on the other hand wouldnt of scored again if the match was twice as long

Sums it up for me. Defence was outstanding.

So your friend's assessment was that the team put no effort in? Crikey.

| Quote: HDM "But the positive aspect from the contest is clearly the fact that the attendance of 12,416 shows the concept of taking a Super League game to Wollongong was a success. That crowd was better than any figure for games between the two clubs in the 2017 regular season.'"
If that's a benchmark for success then count me out.
