I agree. There is still a lot if ill feeling towards him from FC fans but you have to respect him for this charity work. What he's doing isn't easy and it's for a great cause.

| It's a source of regret that we'll never know what could have been had he stayed, for him or us. We were a pretty battle-hardened outfit at the end of 2007, come that extremely close play-off v Wigan, he could have made the difference. As it was he secured Rovers survival instead. Never liked him as a person, but undeniably a pivotal RL figure in the city. Good luck to him in his charity work.

| Quote: Bigger Daddy "Interesting. He hadn't signed his contract because there was no reference to a guaranteed testimonial, which he says he was verbally promised. I have no doubts that he left for more money though. Just shows how slack the previous regime was.
He was actually very honest about his contribution to his fall from grace, and his problems with alcohol and depression.
Interesting that he said Peter Sharp was the best coach he'd ever had. Makes him leaving Hull when he did even dafter really.
Hope his charity efforts are successful, Dove House is a great cause.'"
I used to work with a relative of Cooke's and on a work's night out PC came along and told me exactly the same thing.

If he'd killed fewer brain cells over the years he might have realised that it wasn't in the club's gift to promise any such thing. They should never have promised it and he should have spotted the 'mistake' from the start.
That said he still took the club's coin so no excuse in my eyes.

Swain said much the same thing IIRC. We should probably have held onto Sharp for longer, despite his shortcomings when it came to signings. What we've learned since indicates that signings may have been something he had less control over than it appeared.
As for Cooke, I still have zero sympathy. He's been the architect of his own downfall and if even half of what I've been told about his private life is true he's (or at least was) a pretty despicable human being. Good luck to him if he's finally turned a corner but he has a lot of bad karma to make up for.

| After watching Superleagues Super Men tonight I've kind of lightened up on the way I think about him. I feel for the man and if what he claimed tonight had any truth in it I can forgive and forget. He had a problem with the then Hull FC board which some of us now have after AP took control and blew the lid on certain practices. He left Hull because he had a problem with his contract which he arranged in June 2005 but refused to sign because on the testimonial due in 2008. As we know, in the spring of 2007 he left and went to Rovers. ATEOTD he was a HKR fan playing rugby ( very well may I add) for Hull FC, I'm a Hull Fan and should I have played rugby for Rovers and got an opportunity to play for the team I love then I may have done a Cookie. Good luck to him and I hope his demons are long behind him..If I meet him in the street tomorrow I will happily shake his hand and wish him all the best.

| he was at CP shaking hands with rovers fans prior to the actual news and glorifying in the fact. He shat on FC massively and I for one am glad he regrets his pathetic actions. Ruined his own career more through his own greed than anything and what FC did to stick by him should have counted.
Good on him for turning himself around and helping charity, but he'll never get any sympathy from me.

| He was my favourite player at Hull at the time he left and ultimately I can never really forgive him for the manner in which he departed. However, I think there are two sides to the story and I have no doubt the club were not looking after players properly at the time he left. I thought Cooke was very honest tonight and obviously had it tough once he left the club with his depression and drinking. His move to Rovers ruined him and he was never the same player which is a shame as he was a great ball player.
Good luck to him with his charity efforts.

Couldn't have put it better myself, my opinion of him changed watching the program last night. Although the manner in which he left hurt at the time, if he was getting messed around by our club and the opportunity to play for his childhood club arrived, you can understand why he left.
Glad he's putting his problems behind him to help others with his charity work, he can't undo his mistakes but at least he's making up for lost time.

| I enjoyed that programme last night, Cooke came across far better than I expected.
Don't miss next week, the greatest player (along with Alex Murphy) I have ever seen, Billy Boston. I hope he tells the story about apartheid in South Africa when he was selected for 1954 tour, it still hurts him to this day.
Don't miss it.

| I think with all the details coming out of the way the board have messed everyone about over the years and cut corners on everything, it's quite easy for everyone to understand why Cookey left. Just imagine what we could have achieved had the board not been so stupid.
On a separate note, I found it hard to watch after the first few minutes because some reason I noticed he kept saying "the club" a lot more than anything else and just kept focusing on that! It's like when you notice someone that says "you know" or "erm" a lot!
