If the board every signed up a decent coach, it would mean us producing decent rugby on the field and they wont like that!

Quote: Mrs Barista "Not quite. Anderson will be paid out for next season so won't be desperate to get a job. Agar will have a reasonable start to next season then a disastrous slump and will be sacked in July, by which time Huddersfield will have sewn up a deal with Anderson. Then we'll have to appoint Last due to lack of available quality coaches. Wow! You've changed your tune!! You took a while to get to pessimism and cynicism but boy you're there now icon_wink.gif

But in the days of the salary cap when the worth of all squads at the full cap is much of a muchness, it's not rocket science to establish that the coach is the key differentiator. Chuck in the fact that we still have untapped potential in terms of attendances (If we were top of the tree, I reckon we could average 15,500 ish) and the fact that when we do get to a final the retail turnover goes through the roof, and I just don't understand why we don't go for a world class coach as, if he were successsful, it would pay for itself.

I've posted this a lot on these boards over the last few years and e-mailed the same to James Rule who said he disagreed about the coach being the differentiator and in his opinion it was the squad. I'm not cynical, I can just see it happening that Nathan Brown is OOC at Huddersfield next season, there are no standout British coaches to target and Daniel Anderson is in all likelihood out of a job. With Ken Davy there propping up eye-watering losses already, why wouldn't he make Anderson an offer if he wants to take an already very good Huddersfield team to the next level? In the meantime we'll muddle through with Agar, maybe scrape the 8 given the improvements others have made and have a big turnover of marquee players for another "Season of Promise II" in 2012. Won't stop me going, as supporting FC is what I do, but compare the shape and cohesion of Wigan this year vs last and it's very frustrating. Until the penny drops that you a top drawer coach is required to deliver silverware at this level and a plan is put in place to get one, the most success we can hope for is a top 4 finish and a lucky run in the cup IMO. Bit depressing but there you are.

I think that overall our squad is poor compared to the top 5. We have far too many ordinary players, under performing players and our marquee players don't live up to the hype. How many of our players would definitely get into the starting line ups of the teams who finished above us last season?

Excellent post Mrs B, it makes for a very chilling read when put into perspective.

Deffo into all of them:

Briscoe
O'meley
Manu
Fitz

Possibly into some of them:

Moa
Yeaman (on reputation rather than form)
Tickle
Berrigan
Long

Contrast that with how many of leeds, wigan, wire and saints players would be 1st chocie in their position at our club

excellent, send this one to the full board, somethings got to give, whether a drop in attendance/pass holders, would make someone on that board to take note? i dont know!!!, we have witnessed absolute rubbish this season (baring a handful of games) even the kids last season was saying they didnt want to go because its boring! I think next season when we (if) see a drop on the attendance/passholders maybe, just maybe this would set alarm bells ringing with our board? but by the time theyv realised, they'll get rid of Agar, we'll all cheer, but come crashing down again when Andy Last is promoted and given a 3 year contract, he then takes us to 12 in the table, but dont despair its not his team judge him on next season, by which time we scrape the playoffs, KO 1st round, season over, Last only survives the next 8 matches, he resigns, we then look at the assistant coach again, and it goes on and on and on, sound familiar?

Exactly. But it was like that last year , it's been like this for some time in fact with no real hope of anything changing anytime soon. My point earlier this season was that I felt we peaked when we reached the dizzy heights of 4th with the liklihood of a 7th place finish and little or no prospect of winning anything. Unless we pull a couple of good signngs out of the bag 2011 will be tougher and probably just as dour. I'll be surprised if we can maintain the numbers of passholders over the next few seasons and that can then start to undo the good work done off the field. The momentum has been staggeringly good in all things financial but it wouldn't take that much for it to go into reverse. Like you say we go because we love the game and the club but not every one is like us. We need some radical action and that has to be with the coaching set up first , all of it. I still hope that I'm wrong. I still hope that we win the GF next year under Agar but I'm not holding my breath.

Wigan fans were saying the same about Fielden, Coley, Riddell etc last season. I agree that our squad's not as good, but don't think it's relatively "poor". What we don't know is what is the art of the possible with our current squad, whereas Wigan now know what theirs is capable of with the right coach to maximise its potential.
