Just in case you are not aware, as I work in the construction industries I get this news, so thought I would share. I'm sometimes concious that good news doesn't spread very well in this city.

The A63 in Hull is going to have major redevelopment work done on it to improve times. As Balfour Beatty describe;

Quote: "The 1.5 kilometre scheme in the centre of Hull will improve journey times for road users through conversion of a major interchange into a split level junction with a two-lane dual carriageway carrying east-west traffic below north-south traffic in a new 400 metre underpass.
The scheme will also include two new bridges which will link the south and north of the city for pedestrians, cyclists and disabled users.'"

And also the electrification of the line between Hull and Selby seems very likely now rlFull storyrl

All in all, good news for the city and much needed investment, and potentially new jobs to boot.

That is good news. Once they've built the underpass the replacement bus service from Selby will be a bit quicker.

When there is work on the Hull-Selby line they replace the trains with a replacement bus service. This bus service currently takes one hour but with the improvements to the Mytongate junction it will only take fifty-eight or fifty-nine minutes.

I am sure that when they are electrifying the lines (finally) they will try and minimise disruption by only cancelling the trains I need to get to and from home games.

I doubt they will co-inside, the earliest the A63 work will take place is 2016 and I gather the train line work will be next year.

Also, due the junction at Gillerdyke trains can start from Goole for Doncaster and London.

Hmmm, actually thats really not that bad for an infrastructure project.

The scheme will include two new bridges and an underpass. Plus ground works, landscaping, highway control etc.

The A556 bypass, which doesn't involve ground work in a high water table area, which is around 4 miles cost somewhere around £212 million.

Cos it'll be easy as to run the overhead lines over Selby swing bridge

So I'm stuck with a 60 minute bus journey. Sighs. I might just move back to Hull.

I do have a serious infrastructurey question. If they are going to lower the A63 by 7m and Hull is 2m above sea-level does that mean the new road will be technically underwater? The point were Chants Ave ducks under the elevated railway often floods (I think it did again yesterday) so how will they stop the A63 turning into a marina when it rains?

Sorry, it does represent a small challenge but bridge works are somewhat second nature to UK Infrastructure teams and they have existing methodology. You of course have a permanent connection with a bridge on one side, which is where the electrical supply will be managed. The bridge, will then have the pylons attached too it. Logistically a little more difficult than standard installation and certainly specialist, but not significant time wise.

I'm actually not sure it is a given that the line will be closed. A lot this sort of work can be carried out overnight. We will see I suppose.

Usually deep sheet piles, or sealed pile walls are used to stop flooding where it falls below the water table. Of course, effective drainage needs to be installed, which is perhaps where Chants Ave has gone wrong.

Hopefully it wont be closed. They've closed it at the moment to replace the swing bridge which is annoying but apparently it'll make the journey time shorter so I'm happy about that as it might mean I'll get to the KC in time for kick-off.

Hopefully they'll get the drainage right or TransPenine will need to put on a replenishment DUKW service.

Chants Ave has a small pumping station to remove surface water...the problem is though if the drains which the pumps discharge into are already full theres nowhere for the water to go till the backlog subsides...new A63 underpass will also have a pump station fited to remove surface water....this will be piped to the nearest body of water!!!!
