I'll leave the hand wringing to the drama queens but.....

A couple of things;

Penalties - were obviously going down the route of controlling the ruck ala Wigan etc and some players just haven't got to grips with it yet. I'm sure it will come with time but it's frustrating at the moment. Interestingly Gentle apparently asked Cummins for clarification as to what they were doing wrong to be getting so many penalties and he only bothered to reply yesterday so they haven't been able to work on it training yet.

Wasting tackles - we still seem to fall into the trap of wasting tackles by doing something just for the sake of it without any real thought of an end product. The winger should never be taking a skoot on the 4th tackle when we are deep into opposition territory, it's just taking a tackle for the sake of it. Again, hopefully the players will get out of the habit of wasting tackles and actually start making every tackle meaningful with a purpose.

Finally if your weeping and wailing tonight ask yourself if you were being sensible about our progress pre-season and whether your reaction to tonight's game actually fits in with your previous thoughts that it takes time to go from a team that just made up the numbers to one that can expect to do something.

Should have put atleast 40 on Salford in the second half, Salford? Don't they have a habit of knocking you out of the cup too?

Bit patronising, Robbo.

I don't think anyone is "weeping and wailing". There is just clear disappointment at losing to a team who finished below us last season.

We beat Salford away easily last season. The result tonight isn't a step forward therefore, in fact the opposite. Disappointing, much.

From reading the game thread their is plenty of weeping and wailing though I do take your point. The opposition doesn't really matter IMO it was just a poor performance which can happen to anyone. Didn't Wigan lose at home to Quins last season? We won't be the only team to lose to a team that finished below them last season either. I travelled all the way there, had to sit in the car park for 45 minutes before we could get out and I'm still driving back now and I'm less dissapointed then people who stayed home and listened on the radio (not that I'm having a dig at those who couldn't go). If we regularly put performances like that in after a dozen or so games Ill be a lot more disappointed but for now it was expected that performances like this would happen especially early in the season. Apologies if I came across patronising.

Poor results/performances happen to every team including the very best. Look at Saints scrapping a lucky draw at an injury ravaged Rovers team last week. Clearly Saints are a far suprerior side but they just played poorly on the day. It happens.

You are assuming this was a "bad night at the office", an uncharacteristically poor performance. The alternative view is that it's entirely consistent with performances over recent seasons and we've yet to see evidence of a genuine improvement. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

Yet a draw at home to Warrington had the same fans thinking we had greatly improved with talk of how we would have lost that game in previous seasons etc. As you say the truth is somewhere in the middle but personally I've decided to take a philosophical view for this season and won't be jumping on the back of poor performances which IMO can, at least in part, be attributed to the previous regime.

Maybe the Pearson/Gentle effect and the performances so far have got us too "excited" and today just brought some of us back to earth.

Last month we were all saying improvement over previous seasons would be ok, buliding for the future. One loss by 2 points in a game that, last year, had we gone 10 points down early on would in all probability have led to a 30 point shellacking, has got us all negative again.

Let's sleep on it and see what we think tomorrow

Tonight's result is a good indication that we are not going to be challenging anywhere near the top of SL this season which most sensible fans already knew. Our squad just isn't good enough.

However, it doesn't change the fact that losing to a pretty ordinary Salford side is very disappointing and tbh we don't really look that much better than Fu**wit Agar's team of the last few seasons.

Mr. Pearson has certainly got his work cut out !

dissapointed to lose, salford are no mugs and deserved to win, we only played for half a match, you can't blame gentle for losing the ball in the scrum when you have head and feed, which cost us the game leveling try, plus a 4 on 2 overlap at the second to last play that turner ignored, most of the game we played dumb rugby!

Dumb players do dumb things. Turner isn't good enough and, hopefully, is playing his last season in a Hull shirt. I hope a few others will be joining him as well, if we want to compete with the best of course.
