Depends what you want to be able to do, do you really need the portability of a laptop, do you want it to play games on, or to view the net etc.
If you can give some idea of what you'll use it most for then I am sure we can point you in the right (and inexpensive) direction.

Get a Macbook, I got "converted" two years ago and I've not looked back, I'm running Office and all the standard Microsoft stuff, plus it still (much to my amazement) runs as fast as the day it was bought, not like a Windows PC/Laptop in the slightest.
Also, I just run free virus software as you really don't need any over the top protection as the hacking market for Mac's only represents between 5 and 10 % of total machines, apparently if your going to hack its pointless making stuff that can only shut down "5% of the worldwide market".

It also depends on the type of gaming you are after as well. If it is just silly little web games then a bog standard laptop will do. However if you are looking at Call of duty etc you want a decent graphics card.
Look for one that can run Crysis well.

A laptop isn't the best platform for gaming, a console is much better suited (as it's what they are designed for) |
