Hull FC have confirmed that second rower Mike Burnett has joined Harlequins on a season long loan deal.

The 22-year-old has seen his chances limited with the Black and Whites because of heavy competition in the back row and the opportunity to gain regular first-team football in Super League has come at a good time.

Speaking to www.hullfc.com, Burnett said, “I’m really excited about it and looking forward to the move. It will be a good test for me playing regularly at Super League level and a good opportunity for me to develop my game.

“Playing at a higher intensity with Quins will help me improve my game and hopefully then I can come back to Hull and stake a claim for a regular place in the side.”

He added, “I spoke to Rich and he felt it was a good move for me to give me more first-team opportunities, test myself and help improve my all round game which should help me in the long run.

“I know I have to be patient at Hull. We have a strong pack of forwards, both at prop and in the back row where I can play, but if I know I work hard my time will come.

“It will be hard to dislodge any of the current guys in there as they are top players with bags of experience, so that is why this Quins move comes at a good time for me so I can continue to learn, come back a better player and give it a real crack at Hull in years to come.”

Burnett signed a three-year contract with Hull in 2009 after impressing in an extended run in the team, which was unfortunately cut short due to injury.

Since then he has struggled to force his way back into the reckoning, taking in a loan spell at Sheffield last season and despite heading away from the club once more, head coach Richard Agar still says he’s still very much in his plans.

“For us, Mike is an impressive young pro and a determined young man and I think Harlequins will see that in the player they have this season,” he said.

“We are well stocked in the back row at the moment and for a player like Mike, with his age and experience, he needs to be playing week in-week out to really benefit and we are grateful to Quins that they have been able to offer him that opportunity.

“Mike has the potential to develop into a top play, he has the right attitude and attributes to do that and this move will certainly aid his development.”

He added, “The aim for us at the end of the season will be for us to sit down, review his performances and look to renew his contract, so this is a good challenge for him.”

Burnett’s first competitive game could well be for Harlequins at Millenium Magic Weekend. Hull FC will also be in action against rivals Hull Kingston Rovers on the same weekend.

Good move Burnett and for Hull, they have chance to see if he is good enough over a full season and Burnett will also get a good chance to improve on a regular basis.

Good news for Mike, he would struggle to get a look in this season and reserve grade is no good for him. Good for us too, if he does well then we can bring him back into the squad.

Good deal all round, as long as he does play week in week out. I thought he looked very promising in 2009.

My only concern is the move to London, having done it myself in the past it can be a very lonely experience being that far away from family and friends, I am sure he'll get support from Quins and FC and I really hope it helps him prove his worth.

Pleased with this move, it's something we haven't done enough with young players. Hopefully this is the start of rectifying that.

It is a great move for Burnett in that he will get much needed regular Super League rugby at Quins. From Hulls point of view i'm not so sure because i dont think there is a call back clause in the agreement and if he rips up trees down in London then Hull are likely to have competition for his signiture when his contract expires at the end of the season.

He signed a 3 year contract in 2009, meaning (I think) he's contracted for 2010, 2011, 2012 (as his previous contract would have expired in 2009), so I think we'll be covered. I may be mistaken though.

I'm not the mosty fussed anyway. He's not bad, and he's young, but he's never really stood out in my eyes and we have no shortage of back rowers, both in our first team at the moment and players like Crooks, Green, Cunningham, Kent who we're promoting through the ranks atm.

He is OOC at the end of the 2011 season.

And (as an aside to the other comment)why would anyone join Wakey to improve their game?

Its character building, being put out of your comfort zone.

If he gets a bit twitchy for home, would it be possible for him to train a couple of times a week with Hull so he doesn't have to be in London on a full time basis??

And how is this different from any other team having competition for OOC players? If he stayed and got gametime from Hull and ripped up trees, there would be competition for his signature, surely? If he stayed and didn't get gametime for Hull, it's fair to say he wouldn't be developing at all, particularly as he's lost a bit of momentum in his development. I don't see how Hull are losing out here. Good that this is another contract you've got the inside track on the clauses of. Have you posted the link to the interview with Berrigan where you said he talked about bringing in lawyers to write some clauses into his deal to safeguard against future tax legislation changes 3 years ago yet? icon_wink.gif
