| One of my big interests in life is the two World Wars, wargraves and the memorials to those who served this country. I am a local volunteer with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and have adopted a number of wargraves of Battle of Britain pilots. I give them a clean and tidy to maintain their appearance, befitting of the person who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. I am not sure if you have ever had a look at the CWGC website but on it is a publication listing rugby players who have served their country in its time of need.
This is a link to it“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor, the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, WE will remember them!”[/i

| Amazed that no-one from Hull has answered this seeing as you have a VC in Jack Harrison from the Great War.

Possibly they have e-mailed him directly?
I'll be sending the OP a copy of a pamphlet covering Jack Harrison's brief life. Unfortunately, like many other fallen in WW1, Jack's grave is unknown. Jack's only son, Jackie, was also killed during the Dunkerque evacuation in WW2

I e-mailed direct. Was very proud that my 10 year son chose Jack for school project about someone famous connected with Hull. The rest of the class chose the usual suspects(Wilberforce, Amy Johnson, Craig Fitzgibbon, Michael Dobson and Shaun Long). The only thing my son learnt about Shaun was that he had his first cigarette aged 10!

| Thank you to all FC fans who have either pm'ed or emailed me directly. Yes, Jack Harrison VC has been mentioned and to be honest over the next week or so, I will be reading all about this man and his exploits. It is a shame that he, like so many others has no known grave. Also what is the full name of the person who was killed during the Dunkirk evacuation?
Thank you all again for your help so far with this project.

It was Jack's son Jackie, or John as he came to be known. There are more details in the info I e-mailed to you.

| I know he wasn't actually killed, but Hull had a great Aussie forward prior to WW1 called Steve Darmody, who signed on at the end of the 1911/12 Aussie tour. This must have been bigs news at the time. Sounds like he was a pacy attacking player in the mould of Willie Manu.
Anyway, he volunteered for the Army and lost a foot in action. Undeterred, he joined the Royal Flying Corps and used a prosthetic leg/foot.
Of course he was unable to play rugby again, so although it wasn't the ultimate sacrifice the bloke ended up losing his carerer due to serving in the war which makes him worthy of recognition in my eyes.
Not sure what happened to him later although I know Hull played a benefit match for him after the war.

On the Commonwealth Wargraves Commision Website they acknowledge that John Harrison was indeed a Hull rugby league player.

Sadly like so many of them he has no known grave. I am currently reading the book This Righteous War by B.S. Barnes which has a couple of features of John.
It says that he thrilled the Hull fans with his dashing three quarters play. The story of how he won his VC is - well - outstanding. A very brave man and a credit to your club and the anniversary of his death was this month. Does his former home at 75 Wharncliffe Street, Spring Bank, Hull still exist?

| James Sanders who played for Leeds that day, and got injured thus missing the replay was a Leeds Pal who also died in the First World War.

Thanks for the link, very interesting. Wharncliffe Street is still there, it's a short walk from the KC and the site of The Boulevard.
Jack Harrison's record for Hull was 101 appearances, 91 tries, two goals and 270 points. The tries included the club record of 52 in one season, 1914-15 which is unlikely to ever be beaten.

He also shares the record of tries in consecutive games with Horney I believe.
