I never understand these kinds of comments, you need your most intelligent rugby player and arguably best passer playing at hooker, Shaul is neither of those. Just because he's good at scooting doesn't mean he'll make a good 1st grade hooker

houghton's passing is pretty average. It was noticeable on Saturday how much better the ball out of dummy half was when litten went there

| Littens passing from dummy half was very good. He’s earned a shot for next year.
If not, I give up to be honest

Why do you need your best passer of the ball playing 9? Houghtons passing is hardly inspiring.
If you cant pick a ball up off the floor and pass two to 3 metres to a team mate then you really dont want to be playing R/L
The game is changing. We have been used to Danny Houghton at 9 as a tackle machine but the best nines in Super League are runners not tacklers.
Jezz litten is too lightweight at the moment and if we do go with Connor at Full back then for me Shaul would make a good running 9.

| Jake would be a good full back, he is quality without doubt, but I would be loathed to move Jamie as apart from this @%#@ season he’s been a star for us, and a local lad which has to be a positive, kick him up the backside along with 90% this year, but winger or hooker can’t see it.

| Connor at fb and Shaul on the left wing just makes sense to me. Connor, Kelly and Sneyd are our 3 most important attacking players and we need them all on the field getting their hands on the ball as much as possible. Connor at centre is also an option of course, but I dont think we get to see the full range of his talents there. He has all the ingredients to be a world class full back.
All that is good about Shaul is still applicable if he plays wing. We will still get the benefit of his runs from DH and his broken field running, and we get a winger with some genuine pace for a change, I think he could do well there. And he wont be asked to be a ball player, which clearly isn't his game.
Shaul at hooker however is a silly suggestion.

What a load of rubbish. The best 9's passing is excellent, Roby, McShane and they can tackle too. A great 9 gets the ball moving at pace, gets the runners on the front foot. Shaul couldn't do this. A lot of game management comes from your 9 too, Shaul couldn't do this

You contradict yourself there saying Shaul at 9 is a silly suggestion when you suggest on the wing we would get the benefit of his runs from Dummy half which is exactly the point of him playing at 9 so we could get some go forward with his speed from D/H which is clearly missing from Houghtons game at the moment.

Its not a contradiction at all. Shaul already runs from DH quite often and its one of the stronger parts of his game. I am saying we wouldnt lose this if he went on to wing.
There is alot more to being a good hooker than just running from dummy half.

Took the words out of my mouth. My only concern about Shaul on the wing is his kick returns, the role has changed in the modern day, you need to have big bodies/strong ball carriers on the wing now.
If we played an offload game through the middle Shaul could be very effective, however as a pivot he isn't. His game is very much in the Wade McKinnon mould IMO. His best asset is his support play, which we don't utilise

5 to 10 years ago I would have agreed, but there actually seems to have been a move away from that and smaller quicker wingers are again having success. Grace, Marshall, Johnstone, Eden. None of them are much bigger or stronger than Shaul is. Its all about playing to your strengths.
