I refereed RU for a while. One of the things we were taught is you are not mind readers and can only make decisions on facts and not what you think the player might of intending. In this case the referee doesn't know what the players in intentions were but the facts are the defenders fingers "attacked" the eyes of the ball carrier. Based on facts an attack to the eye and either a red or yellow card.

Fair enough, should have been a penalty though that along with Hampshire high tackle on Naughton didn't get picked up by the officials and it cost us two try's.

No it never. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that as soon as a decision is or isn't made, the entire game changes from that point on? |

Obvious penalty as was the Naughton incident. Shambolic refereeing to miss such a fundamentally easy decision to make, particularly the Lineham one. Words in ears only happen at certain times against certain teams/players. I think that's the 4th official/video ref brief anyway.
