I honestly think that with the advent of social media those who wish to spout off, now have a much larger audience. As opposed to pre social media when it was simply the other sad lonely folks stood at the bar.
Social media has now created a society where we openly "hate" the opposition. We "hate " the opposition players. This causes tensions which is all a nonsense really, but is allowed to bubble away under the surface. (I am not implying this everybody, but I'm sure you understand where I am coming from)
The feelings that I see on social media towards certain players and teams is laughable. No longer is it possible to have a sensible discussion its all about abuse and who can shout the loudest.
This and all the rest of the nonsense we have to endure, rule changes, inept referees (Oh for a Lindop today) terrible TV commentary, even our local BBC radio station with its one eyed presenters. It all adds up to a general feeling of doom for some of the older supporters who have seen different eras.
That said it might just be the old gits harking back to a golden era that was in fact far from golden
