It was back in the "squadding days", when getting chosen in the squad but not selected in the 1st 15 meant that you played 'A' team. So, with 'A' team money plus half 1st team money, you could actually be earning close to 1st team money anyway and if you were selected as sub, you'd be on more than the 1st team. Dean & Harkin were quite happy to be rotated by Bunting, who usually selected the number 7 whom he thought best suited to play against the specific opposition.
