Quote: R.B.A "Neil Hudgell played in Paul Fletchers testimonial game. I remember Johny Vegas playing in a Saints one, think it was Cunninghams. Thinking back to the 80s I recall a referee putting a shirt on and the Rovers pack smashing him. Think it was Ronnie Campbell but could be wrong.
One of the best testimonial games I have been to was Jamie Carraghers. Liverpool played Everton. Both teams started with full sides but only really played at 80%. Then Liverpool started bringing on ex team mates of Carragher and some old Liverpool legends. Everton put on their youth side. One of the linesman wore an Everton shirt and didn't give Liverpool anything all day. Carragher even took a penalty for Everton. It was just good fun which is what Testimonials should be. Whitings big day was ruined yesterday and its a crying shame for such a loyal clubman, and good player.'"
Aye, for Netherton's I'd think the prospect of seeing the likes of Iain Morrison, Stanley Gene, Makali Aizue, Shaun Briscoe, Chris Chester, even trotting about at half-pelt, would be more attractive/special than a preparatory game for a mix of kids and fringe first teamers. The latter are important and necessary, but not really an 'event'.
Jonny Vegas dropped the ball with the tryline begging, I vaguely recall, to much good natured derision.
