| The only problem I have with charging punters to come in is that it discriminates against regular punters, when we're in Hull, we often go in for something to eat at New Clarance and usually on a Saturday, obviously we're Hull fans but to be told we would have to pay £4 to get in when we go in most Saturdays is poor imo. For me having the game on is sure to bring in more custom and get the tills ticking over, the need to try to rake in more is a bit of a scam, if you can give £1 to charity why not give the full £5 to charity, say dove house hospice, give the mail a ring, get a piece in the local rag and everyone wins.

Wouldn't they have to put on more bar and door staff?
Isn't the fact they're selling tickets partly to do with them been able to prepare for numbers and to tell everyone without a ticket not to bother queuing/turning up?
And i don't see how it discriminates, everyone can pay to get in.

| Tickets are needed in order to limit the number of people that can enter the pub.

True. They don't need to cost £5 for this, though.

Surely the fact they are doing tickets means they are having to pay someone to work on both the doors, therefore an extra unnecessary cost. If it was my local boozer and all of a sudden I was being asked to pay to get in, because non regulars were coming to watch rugby, then yes it discriminates against regulars, I'm assuming they didn't charge for the England v Italy Euro semi and again I'd assume it would have been busy even though it was on terrestrial TV. If they are doing tickets to avoid queues and over crowding, then why not just advertise that if you want to come in to the pub for the game, then you have to come and pick up a ticket/voucher before the day. I think most landlords would be happy if they had to put on more staff, because it was busy, rather than make a cheap buck and justify it by giving £1 to charity.

| To be honest I couldn't give a .
It's 5 quid to watch a game you otherwise wouldn't be able to see, trust me I'd pay a tenner to watch any Hull game live on tv.
He's running a business, he has over heads and has to make a profit (there's not many in the pub game) it's supply and demand.

Which he now owns. And can use again. People invest in equipment for their businesses all the time, and they recoup that cost over the lifetime of the equipment, not in one day.
Besides, if he's having to sell tickets to limit numbers, one assumes his pub is going to be packed at a time it would otherwise be not quite so packed. He'll make a lot more money than if he hadn't bought the gear and will still have the gear for future use.

Why try to justify it, if you don't give a to$$. Obviously there's demand, but there's ways to justify it. If you do it for one game, then you should do it for every high profile sports event you expect to be busy for. HTH.

| Have to 2 live matches before in Clarence and didnt hesitate to pay Ian a £5 to get in and watch it...he has gone to the trouble to get the gear in and if he wants to boost his takings then i havent got a problem with it at all.
