| I'm confused by this, I would imagine a 3 year deal would give him more money than the 2 years offered by Saints.
He wants trophies and to play in finals and he feels he'll get that at Saints ahead of us, fair enough.
He was never worth a 3 year deal in the first place, maybe he knew he'd be starting from the bench, I'm surprised a little by the deal he turned down from us.

| Quote Rock God X="Rock God X"That depends on what was acceptable to him, doesn't it? Ellis will be on big money, and there's only so much we could justify spending on Manu before a disproportionate amount of our salary cap ends up being tied up in the back row. If Saints have offered him more than that figure, it'd be pointless us trying to match it as it would leave us short when it came to strengthening other (arguably more important) areas.'"
Of course it depends what was acceptable to him that kind of goes without saying. What I am saying is that we should have been able to accommodate him on a 2 year deal. If Saints can then we should be able to. I'd argue that we don't score enough points and we've just lost our best attacking forward - a player with a bit of x factor. Yes we need a half back but when I look across the squad and then look across Saints' squad I'm left wondering how they can afford to pay him what we can't - and I include Ellis in that assessment of our salary cap.

He maybe would have over the terms of the contract, but if we offered the same/20/30/40k less than Saints then he would presumably back himself to get a 1 year deal on that sort of money at the end of his two with Saints.

It is irrelevant whether he had is easy under Agar or not he has always delivered on the pitch, and tbh he has never come across as the big player at FC, he has been a role model for the club during his time at FC imo.

Maybe Manu himself only wanted a 2 year deal? It's not inconceivable, is it. Maybe we could only give him what he'll get at Saints over 3 years instead of their two?
Sad to see him go, but we've easily had his best years.

The question has to be asked 'why now' though? A player of his ability should have moved himself on 3 or 4 years ago, while this club was in the dumps. He's hardly gone to Saints to win things either, has he? They have an uncanny ability to lose the big games over the last 4 years, something only Nathan Brown, ironically, has managed to match.
I really wanted to keep Manu, but our club has paid over inflated wages to players in the past. Maybe, just maybe Manu hasn't liked being brought into line? (I have no idea if this is true, but it's a theory).

Exactly this. We're more used to this than most so, as usual, we'll suck it up and get back to winning ways.
