Quote: oud3pstander "John Maloney best goal kicker we had ,trying to put stats against him and Sammy is impossiable never saw Sammy kick one from half way line .Maloney kicked 2 from there on his debut against NZ .
H.Oulton was some thing special as a kicker thighs bigger than any props and he was a winger saw him kick one from just out side his own 25 line at the Boulevard , pity could not score tries
F.Miller was good to but loved the old kicking jewel bit like RU fullbacks of 60's .
Arthur Keegan was a good kicker to highest point scorer on tour down under but your not allowed to say that as he didn't play for Wigan'"
It was his party piece.
We would score and the opposition would kick off. If they messed up and kicked into touch or didn't make the 10 yard line, we'd get a penalty. The Threepenny stand would launch into 'Go for Goal, Go for Goal, Go for Goal!'. Going for touch was not an option. Sammy would step up to the plate and rarely missed.
As previosuly mentioned this was also winter rugby and the game was not played on the bowling greens of today. Unlike the later years, in the late 70's/ early 80's the Boulevard was a poor pitch. One year they dumped about 600 tonnes of sand on it running from each 20m line. If the sun came out, you could have booked a week's holiday on 'the beach' as it was known at the time.
... don't get any ideas there Adam
