Quote Mild mannered Janitor="Mild mannered Janitor"On the (theoretical) basis that clubs have a capped amount of money on playing staff, then all clubs should in theory be challenging for honour. The key difference will the coaching.
Hudds are doing very well, but I bet that Nathan Browne will be judged sooner or later on finals / trophies. Something I don't think Agar can be judged upon, otherwise he'd be long gone.
I am not an advocate of Agar by any means, but he had been at York as a head coach and then with us as an assistant. Even if he was assistant to a failing coach in Sharp (and I have a degree of sympathy for Sharp, even more so now in hindsight with the leaniency shown to Agar) you'd like to think those lesson would be learned on how not to do it.
Even your example of Maguire is flawed. He had never been a head coach.
I think there needs to be a realisation that peoples preception of a big club is very different. Having a large fan base doesn't simply made a big club. I am quite gaurded by this next comment, but, unfortunately there are far too many moaners who sit in the stands an criticise unjustly and in the long run it will affect recruitment / key appointment. Afterall, can you honestly imagine Matt Sing, Nathan Blacklock or more so Stephen Kearney giving and player / coach a good recommendation about Hull FC given the shocking treatment by a section of fans towards them?'"
I fail to see how I am "flawed" in my example of maguire when I posted
Quote Mild mannered Janitor="Jake the Peg"
Appointing an untried coach into a head coach position which he clearly has no credentials for was/is a mistake. maguire had worked for about 6 years with one of the best coaches in the world at one of the best clubs in the world. it was a calculated risk by wigan but one more likely to succeed than appointing a guy who has been assistant to your 2 previous failed coaches.

Perhaps you can explain how that is flawed .
As for the rest of your post, yes, the coach is a big part of the equation, but so is player development, youth set up, scouting systems, off field support for players (medical treatment, physios, training facilities etc. etc) and I'd bet that wigan, saints, wire, hudds and wigan all invest more than us in each of these areas.
I can't agree that players will be influenced by fans complaining. It won't even be a factor. A player would take salary, facilities, potential for winning games and trophies and who they will be playing for and with into account, but they know fans are a bunch of whingers whoever they play for
