Top six 2005 - Trinity.:

Early indications are that Brian McDermott is interested.

He would personally be my number one choice with what seems available. He’s been a winner and enjoyed good relative levels of success at his clubs.

Further to that he appears a strong coach who would have no problem whipping the team into how he wants them playing.

I guess there is a few candidates so we will see.

He would be my first choice too.

I didn`t have a problem with his signing, I was actually in favour of it but there is no doubting that with his age and him slowing down the couple years before he was a big risk, in a key position and took up the budget, there were plenty of posters on here that posted that at the time. In the same vein he could of been a huge success, as I say its a risk, some work out some don`t, it`s all in hindsight as you say but some signings are riskier than others and Brough was a big risk that didn't pay off IMO.

Nobody really knows with signings, I now try to avoid getting too excited or too negative about any signings, Anthony Tupou springs to mind as one I got very excited about we all knew how that turned out and then you have signings like Kirmo, I mean who got excited about that at the time? Didn`t we get him in a swap deal with 2 or 3 other players? Then out of nowhere he was probably the best second row forward in the league for a couple of years, anyway I`m going down the garden path into the wilderness on this one, too much caffeine this morning icon_biggrin.gif

I guess it`s all dependant on the choices we have? Unless of course he is your first choice regardless icon_biggrin.gif I wouldn`t be disappointed with BM again I think he would be a good fit for a club like us right now.

Mv Dermott for me too...he would bring back discipline, sort the D out and give us a game plan to work to...in this game you've always got to earn the right to play by doing the hard work first and for an example of how that works in action just watch Saints and the way they defend and bring the ball out of their own 20 - regardless of how much more money they have for better quality players it's the work ethic first

I'm going to go against the grain re. Mcdermott here but i put the following in the new coach thread and i'm sticking to it.....

[iNot for me. McDermott's success have come with big spending clubs, Leeds and their riches (and the golden generation) then Toronto who spent full cap in part time leagues. And it took him two attempts to take them up there. When money is less plentiful his record is poor, at London he got sacked after winning 7 of his last 38 games (yes i had to look that up but i knew it wasn't good!) and lost 6 out of 6 in superleague when the cash ran out at Toronto. He's currently 'coaching consultant' at Oldham. They haven't won a game since he arrived. He's not really our kind of coach.[/i

Now i'll not be gutted if he does come, he may well shake things up and he is a Wakefield lad but his success record comes purely off the back of Leeds' golden generation, even then they only topped the table once and they didn't even make the top four on a majority of occasions. Once they finally all retired they ended up in the bottom four and he was sacked. A 36% win rate at London, somehow failing to get Toronto up first time despite spending masses more than the opposition then losing every game when they finally got there and now not making much impression at Oldham don't exactly point to the coaching genius he is made out by some. Doubt he'll be cheap either and he'll not be used to our kindof facilities. If he wants the job i imagine Carter will go that way and he'll have my support if he gets it but i certainly have reservations.

A lot of good candidates out there who would all give the team and club the lift it needs after the last three years. Would be happy with Rowley, McDermott, Ward, Henderson. Just hope we don't go for an appointment from within the club. I want to see fresh ideas.

Brian Mc or Danny Ward for me.

I don’t buy in to the local lad or played for the club requirement, I’m interested in who can shape and lead us into a difficult year and beyond.

McDermott has had a hugely successful career, (player and coach), and has achieved pretty much all there is to achieve.

An apprenticeship under Tony Smith at the Giants and Rhinos, coached a struggling limited budget club in London and won everything there is to win as a coach when back at Leeds.
Yes with a golden generation of players but it still needed to be won, with Toronto anyone should have got them up, he did, Rowley didn’t. Toronto has been well covered but the contract and administration left their super league chances as slim to none.
Could he manage to steady the ship at Wakefield? I believe so but the playing group would need to buy in to his approach and philosophies which appear to be discipline based. Do they have the mindset? As professionals you would hope so.
(The mentality piece he did with stevie ward is well worth a listen/watch)

As for Danny Ward, similar start to his career coaching London gaining promotion and certainly not disgracing themselves whilst in the super league. Would Danny’s approach to the playing group be more suitable than McDermott’s? Possibly.

Either way we have to be realistic. Talk of JD, Wane etc it’s pure fantasy. We know where we are as a club and I’m sure MC knows where we need to be in terms of budget. I would assume, (as with all of the above), that McDermott and Ward will meet that criteria and have an interest in the role.

Brian Mac not for me, I've explained previously why, and for a team like ours it will be very much similar to what we have experienced over the past 3 years without a massive uplift in budget.

Go on the Leeds forum and ask for their feedback, or find the massive thread where they want him out, it makes the CC ones on here small fry.

I take on board what you say and it could well work out well but i'll take issue with the bit highlighted. McDermott coached them in the Ian Leneghan owned era and spent near as damn it full cap. It was the era of Danny Orr, Henry Paul, Mark Mclinden, Rob Purdham, LMS, Tony Clubb, Luke Dorn etc were there and they had on paper a very good side yet their finishing positions got progressively worse whilst he was there. Still it could turn out to be a match made in either heaven or hell but if MC thinks Brian Smith was stubborn and strong-willed wait until he meets Brian Mac!

Whether he had money, the golden generation or whatever else at Leeds he still won things...ask Woolf Wane and countless others at the 'big' clubs who've also spent to their cap how difficult it is to win the GF or Challenge cup

I just think at this moment in time BM would do exactly the job we need, starting with the double D of defence and discipline - by discipline I mean adopting a professional approach to all aspects of off field, training and every other method of looking after mind & body

Now you've said that I think your right and the post does make more sense, although I still say that up until his thumb injury he looked value for money and we were playing some decent stuff, then when he returned from injury things were on a downward trend which didn't help.
