| Quote: vastman "I think that's a fair point as far as it goes. However at some point it became more than that, though it has little to do with local rivalry. There was a period from about 2004 - 2009 where it became a humiliation due to no other reason than the large one sided scorelines, or worse the inability to keep a lead. This often at a time in the season when we were usually doing OK - year after year after year. This against a club that should never have been doing it to us, at no point have Hudds ever been a Leeds or Saints yet season after season they beat us far more convincingly than Leeds or Saints did. Yes you're right they have through the use of these forums attempted to create a false rivalry but boy have our previous teams and managers made it easy for them to look good.
I'd love us to treat it the same way we treat Hull or Wigan, but we don't. We are up for those games in a way we rarely are for Hudds. They have targeted us as a 4 pointer for years, prepared for it and succeeded. Whilst we dream of beating Leeds they are getting the points off us and we never seem to learn.
Maybe now that Hudds are at least on paper a superior side to us we may take this game at least seriously even if it's far from the grudge/derby matches we so enjoy with Leeds or Cas. Hudds are not our rivals and who cares about the bragging rights, what they have managed to make themselves is our bogey team - as Toppo used to say they have the hoodoo over us! That's bad enough in the League but imagine if it were a play off game or a CCup semi, it would matter then.
I just want the players to treat this game with respect - winning would be a bonus but losing not the end of the world. It's the fixture I hate, I rarely care about Hudds other than the week before we play them
Spot on Vatman but, you have to add to that all the cr@p that went on when Hudds fnshed bottom and were protected as a "development" club and the RFL were taing ponts off us for breach of salary cap and at the time it seemed like a case of protecting Hudds and trying damn hard to relieve us of Super League status.
This was fundamentally wrong, Hudds were not in anyway a development club, they just had a nice ground.
Although there were probably good reasons for the actions taken by the RFL, the Eagles appeared to get well and truly shafted.

That's just about spot on; I guess the hope is that the squad and the coach are sufficiently new that they won't really have the Kear culture of getting up for certain games in the season, then rolling over for others. Equally, Shudds won't have a hoodoo over this group of laikers, since they're a completely new group of laikers, so to speak.
Now, where's me 'aribo?

And you wont find one Giants fan that supported the RFL's decision to keep us in SL when it was plainly obvious to anyone we werent ready for it .....best thing they did do was eventually let us go down so we could regroup as a club and come back stronger which i think everyone agrees we did !.
Not one fan i know was happy to be kept up year after year it made a mockery of our sport at the time !.

That's interesting to see your perspective on that.
BUT I'd also say, whether it was the RL or Huddersfield themselves, or a particular person like Davey or Smith that changed things.....one thing is certain they have definitely changed.
Huddersfield is constantly quoted as having a professional and good quality set up. That was not built on history of success with club and youngsters like Leeds, Wigan and Saints, it had to be created.
I hope we do something similar.

| Ken Davy had a hell of a lot to do with it off the field as he financed the team in the NFP season when we did go down - and also the 1st stint we had in super league, and Tony smith was the coach who got the winning mentality back into our club.
Ironic really cos the year we did go down was the best we'd had performance wise and a lot of peoplw said at the time we were actually too good to go down when we did .
you guys are going through a similar thing to us IE rebuilding the club from the bottom...it does take time but is a lot more appreciated when it does come good !!

| Think if shudders has a local rival as we have with Cas it should be Halifax, Calderdale and Kirkless seem to be rivals in all aspects

It is Halifax traditionally but we have been in seperate divisions for the best part of 35 years so not had much of a rivalry with them when we were crap they were doing ok and vice versa now !!

| I just don’t get this pseudo rivalry with Huddersfield.
In recent years it’s been with Cas, simply because we’re both very mediocre, before that it was always Leeds.
Page after page of sniping with a club that’s as removed to us, as say Warrington.
Fact is, they have a better team than us, they have a better Coach than us, they have a richer backer than us, however, their Coach will soon be on his way, their team will fragment & their backer will die.
Hopefully, our squad will improve & Newmarket gets built, crowds improve & we don’t have to rely on a Sugar Daddy.

| Will be interesting to see if the money carries on for long at Huddersfield. I am sure constant shelling out and no silverware to show for it will take it toll at some point. Wasn't Glover persuaded to buy us by his Daughters? If so if he decides to take a back step they would like to carry on the good work he's been doing (but this is well down the track of course)
