Quote: M62 J30 TRINITY "You have hit the nail right on the head POTENTIAL. We have the potential to be bigger than half the clubs in SL we have the city we have been the best in RL before trouble is we've have been playing in crap stadia and ran like a corner shop for 30 + years. The real reason other fans try to put us down is because we have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in RL and they can't handle it. With AG and NM getting PP this will give us the tools to reach our potential'"
This is how i see it, we have one of the biggest names in RL, a name synonymous in all corners of the RL world.
Lets compare ourselves to the best, Wigan.
Same size Town/City - Wigan 81, 203 - Wakefield 76,886
Same size Borough/Area - Wigan 301,415 - Wakefield 315,172, so similar demographic.
We have one serious rival Castleford averaging 7-8K 13 times a year (plus CC games).
Wigan have the Latics who i would imagine average around double that of Castleford 19 times a year (plus FA, LGe cup games).
Both Rugby Towns, mainly working class.
Both Clubs/Areas have a heritage of grass roots RL development, so the interest from an early age is there.
And this is where both clubs start to differ, although both clubs have had their great times and lean ones, ours have been considerably leaner in recent years, so we have had longer for our fans to distance themselves from the club (about 40 years!!)
In this time the club has had a succession of owners who for one reason or another have not been able to deliver any kind of real/sustainable success, we've either been in turmoil or been on the cusp of something and then the wheels have fallen off, or of course at the mercy of the rugby gods as we are now and as we were at the beginning of SL.
This leads to sons hearing fathers talking down the club, (my dad i can recall only ever taking me to one game, the rest of the time i went with my mate and his dad, and then mates when older) people have grown up "knowing" that the club is a bit of a joke, yet we are still here, and the people don't know what they are missing (sometimes!!!)
As Chissit says not everyone likes rugby, ok we cant do a lot about that, but there are a hell of a lot who do and we desperately need them to buy into the club because the club needs that money to become bigger.
Others have stated that if we go down we're as good as dead, that cannot be right, or it cannot allowed to be right, the politics stink we know that, but for the sake of the game we all love, it cannot happen.
The selfish attitude of "xxxx it! ive had enough" though understandable, i've said it numerous times recently will ultimately lead to our kids and grandkids having no pro RL to watch ever again, and that is unbelievably sad.
We have got to look at what Wigan have done, even during Wigan's lean SL years they were still getting around 10k -24K per game, because they always had the belief.
Our club need to give us something, some trust, some belief, but we have got to (no matter what league we end up in) return our support, otherwise it is the end.
I have seen enough from the new owner to show he knows how to bring money into the club, he has opened up revenue streams we did not have before, the money we were spending rarely made it into the clubs coffers, now it is.
It will only carry us so far and then the apathy will win and we will be back to square on again, it really is down to us.
We know why many don't com and haven't for years, lets get them back, if the club give us the belief, we have to bring the money, and more supporters means we all have to spend a bit less.
