He may be early 60s but Wayne Bennett is no spring chicken and still is very influential to players he commands.
I think the great thing about Smith coming is what he can teach Carter. He can tell him how a professional NRL club is set up and what is needed in the background. Whilst Carter says we have no money and I accept that, if Smith can convince him of the benefits then it might be the place for future money to be directed.
We've hired one of the best and it is clearly a massive statement of intent. I'm not sure this could be the turnaround moment but if Smith stays for 2 and a half years we will have a much better infrastructure than ever before.
Well done MC and CB this is a world class appointment. Shame our team is far from SL class, never mind world class at the moment.'"
NOT TRUE !!!!....Quote from him in todays League Express...."I've spoken to him (Smith) about player movements..... and there is some money in the bank"

Think you may have got the wrong end of the stick. There is some money for a couple of players this year due to Paea leaving and probably Hall following him out of the door. It's that money can be reinvested into the squad. What Wildshot was i think talking about was the wider investment picture at the club, things like the academy, backroom staff, training and rehab aids and facilities etc. This takes a much larger and longer term investment and one that we are unlikely to be able to afford without taking money from elsewhere. That money could only come from the first team budget at present which given we already probably have the weakest overall squad isn't an option. In the short term there will be no infrastucture changes, it has to all be about being in superleague next year or the hit our income will take will be critical.

I do appreciate that Boyem, and don't for one minute believe that we have suddenly become the richest club in Superleague overnight, but we all know that MC isn't exactly skint (have you seen his new Porsche ??), and that being a bean-counter he chooses to spend his money wisely, but I think he may have finally realised that without further investment, we are doomed.
I am seeing this as a positive for the club (not had too may of those this season, have we !!)...the fact that Smith is being brought in to save the club, and the fact that MC is making funds available to help him

Don't think he has much choice but to spend the departed players money on new guys, our squad is shallow enough on quality and depth as it is. But i've not seen anything to say Carter himself is investing any NEW money in, just what was already budgeted for this season that is now being saved by the wages coming off the books. Maybe if we stay up then he can look at the distribution of our cash throughout the club and how best to direct it but he will never spend more than we earn. Don't get me wrong i'd love him to throw a fortune at the club but i seriously can't see it and quite frankly i don't blame him either.

That's great news, I've not seen the League Express.
I hope there is more money than there is in my bank account!

I know future circumstances will dictate whether Smith stays longer than the end of the season and we could well keep him for the foreseable future which would be great.
Having fielded around 14+ applications for the job from far and wide, if we were to part company with Smith after just 3 months we would then find ourselves advertising the Head Coach position all over again. If Smith leaves after 3 months it will likely be because we got relegated so I doubt we'd get the same level of interest or calibre of Coach applying then, I doubt it.
Let's hope it all works out!

| Not my choice cant see why we appoint a 60 year old Aussie when there are good out of work British coaches its a panic appointment
Having said that the appointment is made soo good luck to the fella I would start with a top conditioning appointment and a total booze ban from now until after the last game of the season

I would also like to see a ban on players giving interviews, because they are becoming embarrassing as their actions certainly don't match their words.

I have sympathy with this view as he hs been out of the game a while and it ended badly for him in his last job. He also has famously never won anything in his career despite some hefty salary cap spend. But given the way the season is going, topped off with yesterdays shambles, Smith can't do much worse than what has already gone. I just hope he is fully focused on the challenge and not just coming to top up his pension.

Give us a list then and then quantify their goodness.

| The traits of Brian Smith that on paper make him the ideal choice:
- Happy to pull wayward players into line
- Not afraid to axe players from the team
- Disciplinarian
- Has a reputation of going to clubs, sorting out junior development pathways and discipline and getting clubs turned around in a short space of time.
- Been around the game forever
But the best quote I saw:
"few coaches have been described as being as intense, bordering on compulsive-obsessive, as Brian Smith"
What in our current predicament doesn't lend itself perfectly to those attributes?

| No matter what happens, im willing to bet that Mr Smith will leave the club in much better shape than when he came. Hes more than just a coach, he will structure the whole framework from top to bottom. M C will find the experience of working along side him invaluable.
S L status may be at the top of our list, but a healthy club must be our long term objective.

Also, it's great that we have a top notch coach and haven't taken the "cheap" option
Onwards and upwards !

Most are out of work for a reason. I actually saw someone on twitter suggesting Bobbie Goulding!
