| Few years back went in that so called sports bar on Westgate. Nothing RL or Wakey in it, total joke to call itself a sports bar.

You must have been the only person legally allowed in there

| You should have seen it the Friday night before the 1979 cup final it was buzzing in Wakefield everybody had red white and blue hats and scarfs on remember going in the old speakeasy that night it was great loads of excitement and support for the club there was a lot interest in that Wembley team with players like Dave topliss , T skerret J Burke and the one and only W.ashurst.so what did the club do after the cup final sold the best players off for big money and we ended up in the old second division killed a lot of interest off in the city did that, that's what poor management does kills interest .

The name Trinity occurred to me too as the most important thing and I thought, you know what, I live in Beverley anyway! If they can get better suited elsewhere. a Trinity fan I will be...somewhere else! But I didn't like to say!'"
Completely agree. I've lived in the city all my life, but am now at the stage, after recent developments where i couldn't care less if Wakefield is in the club name or not.
Not just the council, but also the vast majority of people living within the area, do not deserve the RL side we currently have. If that can be continued and possibly improved upon by moving slightly out of the region, lets get on with it. Be it Dewsbury, Barnsley etc. I will follow them wherever (within reason!)

| I don't get all this is the fight over and we toddle off somewhere else. As fans we should lobby Mary Creah's chambers in cheapside and the town hall maybe the TV cameras would turn up. We've been here over a hundred years why should we change our name and move out of OUR city. We should fight on and I am sure eventually come to our aid . I think keep going and something will give. Prove to the powers that be we are going nowhere and if we lose we will get these people the worst publicity they have ever had. Makes my blood boil. End of rant

| I realise we may have to move out of the city in the short term but the goal has to be to move back as quickly as possible.
You can take Trinity out of Wakefield (on a temp basis) but not Wakefield out of Trinity
Just my own view and I respect anybody's own take on things

| Quote: JINJER "Sorry PB got to take you to task there, unfortunately a lot of people seem to get pleasure in talking Wakefield down but I'm not one of them, take away the Newmarket debacle and this is how I see it.
Yes the precinct up to the cathedral is a pig to look at, but.
We have the east Wakefield relief road.
We have the award winning Hepworth.
The Ings road out of town shops have had a great facelift.
Kirkgate station is a hundred times better than it was five years since.
The eyesores on the Kirkgate roundabout are being demolished.
The roundabout itself is getting filled in and the road layout changed hopefully for the better.
There are plans in the near future for phase three I believe it's called for the area from the roundabout on Kirkgate up to close to the Weatherspoons to be flattened and redeveloped.
The Ridings is getting a facelift on the bottom and top floors.
The Bull ring area like it or not looks miles better with the buildings getting spruced up and the fountains.
The awful carbuncle that is the market is going to be replaced by a cinema and food outlets.
We have the Trinity shopping centre which always seems full..
The bars/ restaurants in the town centre just go from strength to strength, there are now four or five bars that do a fair quality cocktail.
If you stand in he middle of the Unity car park you don't have to walk more than 30m to get to 8 quality bars.
Eating out is getting much better in the city centre, long gone are the days of kebabs/curries as the main dish.
My daughter used to live in Leeds, she's been back in Normy for three or four years and loves Wakey as a good cheap alternative to Leeds, not instead of but as well as. A few weeks since a dozen or so of her mixed group Leeds friends came into Wakey with my daughter, just for a change, they loved every minute of it, no trouble, not full of 16yr olds getting smashed and wanting to scrap, just a damn good night. One of the group mentioned to my daughter that they couldn't believe Wakey had such a nice vibe and far more upmarket bars than they expected.
Wakey isn't a third world country, OK it's not perfect but which city, large town is. It just needs people to see that the Wakey glass is half full and not half empty.
End of rant!
Barnsley are currently refurbishing their town centre and the new Cineworld is to incorporate a new ten pin bowling alley. I certainly think to include a bowling alley in the proposed new Wakefield cinema would generate a much busier night scene (which is what they wanted to do) than retail outlets would. we have too many shops standing empty. Woods music shop in Wood Street must have been stood empty for nearly ten years. In fact the whole Wood Street/Northgate area has become devoid of human life.

I also visit Canterbury regularly Beagle and, find it to be one of the most vibrant cities that I have visited. the main street is thronging with (mainly) young folk, plenty of big name shops and a generally "doing well" feeling to the place.

Hated that place myself. At least it's not there anymore, turned into Lala's restaurant bar.
I know we've had a bit of a thread drift but anyway, as a bit of positive spin about a place in Wakefield. Anyone tried out the new Qubana's, which is where Barclay's Bank was on Wood street. I went the other month & they've done an absolutely awesome job turning that place into something really special imo. The food is exceptional, the roof top terrace they've created, where you can have a drink is really something different.
I went for someone's birthday and they'd hired a special private room out for the occasion, it was all really top class. The atmosphere in the place is also great. All of which is why I've taken the other half a couple more times since.
On the subject of improvements in Wakefield, the Restaurant scene has literally come on night and day in the City. It wasn't really that long ago, going to a restaurant in Wakey wouldn't have crossed my mind, it was always Leeds. But with places like Brazuca Rodizio, Iris, Cow Shed, Joe's Tapas, Olive and Meze & Amaia etc, I rarely have to venture far to find a really nice place to have a great meal out.

I actually quite miss going for a game of ten pin bowling now and again in Wakefield, used to always have a good laugh down there.

I'm the same, i started Ten pin bowling back in the mid 60's in what is now the Gala bingo club on George Street and then at the bowling alley on the old Theatre club site at Belle Vue.
I have kept up playing on a fairly regular basis and still go when i visit my daughter down in Kent as she lives near a Ten pin bowling alley. Thing is there's a bowling alley just up the M62 at Xscape in Castleford of all places and nothing in Wakefield. Looks like we have been shafted again.

| I think Kev is right. Wakefield as a town centre has been ruined by a council bereft of ideas of regeneration. Cllr Jeffrey is responsible for Wakefield Town Centre regeneration and is obsessed with trying to turn it into a Meadowhall or Trafford Centre. Any developer at all waving money gets free rein. They are flattening Rishworth Street Car Park and leaving the land as a bait for would be investors. They are not interested in the small businesses that made the town centre so vibrant in the past. They absolutely massacred the market and end up with a few stalls in the ridings! Now they want another multi screen cinema where the old one was! We really are desperate for that aren't we!
Sorry! Makes me so angey when you see what is happening in Leeds for instance, yes, a bigger scale but they know the value of a town centre. They integrate the malls within the city. Trinity Walk simply isolates it. The Ridings added to the centre of Wakefield because it was integrated and connected.
Nuff said
