It would seem the only way to make it fit anywhere other than a traditional rugby league area is to throw lots of money at it.
If someone (and that shouldn't be the RFL by the way) is happy to throw their own money at it instead of paying supporters I suppose that's their prerogative.
However a viable club should not be made to suffer, for what is in my opinion a total sham.

Quote: t-r-i-n-i-t-y "Acton & Willesden and Stretham & Mitcham lasted a season in 1935. London Highfield did the same in '33. Professional rugby, continually has only been played in the capital since 1981.

If you put an amateur club isomewhere with no links to the 'heartlands' say like Norwich, how long would you think it would take for them to develop the knowledge, skills and player pool to be able to produce a potential international rugby league player.

You obviously think not, so there's no discussion is there. Who knows what will happen in the future? 25 years ago you'd have thought it was dead in Huddersfield and we weren't too healthy then either. Things change.'"

if you put an elephant in somewhere like the sea, how long until it will develop the skill to swim? It won't it will die, as without frequent cash injections would London and crusaders.

Quote: The Trip "Also just take a step back and lets look at the strides the Council have made over these past few years, we may not have our new stadiums yet but take a look at what has happened in the district. We have the Glasshoughton complex with Xcape, we have the new Hepworth Gallery opening shortly which will kick start the Waterfront Development. We have the New Trinity Walk opening next month which eill breathe life back into the surrounding city centre area. We have the Civic Quarter and the new development of Westgate Station and extra mainline London trains. We have the new Pinderfields Hospital. Plus we have some outstanding tourist attractions such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park and some of the best travel networks in the region.
The District of Wakefield is on the up and lets add in the Stadiums and sporting facilities for the public of wakefield district and there's another compelling argument.
Take a look at Wakefield now and it is probably undergoing it's most radicle change in a generation.'"

Quote: Pinkerton "I don't see how you could say your community scheme is better than ours. We are developing and promoting the game from Hove to Northampton, whereas yours is solely based in and around the Wakefield area. There are also more schools in London playing RL, than in 'hotbeds' such as Leeds and Hull (that line is taken from RLW article). We also have all the above that you've mentioned as to why your community is better than ours.'"

But most people round here only see Quins as an attendance and a score, nothing else - so that is what you MUST be judged on by the RFL. No wonder they feel the need to point it on in the press with some of the fans up here (many different clubs, not just us).

Quote: supercat "Yes but if you look at the quality of clubs that the Wakefield and Castleford area have the quality easily outweighs the quantity. It's ok saying there are more clubs playing in London area but are nowhere near the level of our clubs. If you look at other teams and did your research you can see that each club contains someone who has either played at Cas or wakey or has come from the area.'"

And if you look at how many of these southern clubs have come about in the last ten years or so, you will see what a growth it has been for them. Many of the clubs round here have been around for longer than we have been in SL. I wonder how many of them will say they have had the support of WTW over that period, against how many of the London League teams have had support of Quins RL/Broncos etc..

Not as straight forward to compare apples with pears, or apples and pears and stairs.... icon_wink.gif

Quote: bren2k "There has been a professional RL club in London since the 1930's - every iteration has failed.

Isn't it simply that London is not and never will be a RL area?'"

But can't you see, they are actually achieving something locally down there in the community. Kids round here grow up on the game, they get to know about it from an early age. Kids rugby down there has been a recent thing in comparison. They are doing what they can to build a good structure in place. And that means that they are growing stronger year on year in the amateur levels. (As they are in the Midlands and the SW too - without a SL club)

(Don't get me wrong - SL should be P+R, but under the current structure it is not)

A lot of what is happening in the non-heartland areas is that the RFL are setting up development offices where community coaches are going into schools, setting up partnerships to deliver rugby league coaching and opportunities for kids and teachers to get involved with rugby league, and to point them towards amateur clubs in the region. Those clubs are run by volunteers, those players are playing at an amateur level and having to pay their own transport to games (often up to a couple of hours away for fixtures due to location issues). The players that do well at that level are then looked at by Quins academy and Quins coaching staff in the same that scouting occurs up here. But the cash that the RFL are putting into the area, as far as I know is into community coaching, assisting growth in the amateur game which then helps a pathway to lead to opportunities elsewhere.

I am advised that there are now more players playing amateur RL in the Lomdon region than the whole of Yorkshire, Cheshire, Lancs and Cumbria put together.

So the game is growing in London and much credit must go to Quins for that.

And despite all of these confident and happy messages about London RL, no one bothers to go watch them.

Curious.

The comments about Rugby League in London were in response to various comments on here about how we must automatically be seen better in the community than Quins without much knowledge of what actually goes on round there.

Quins as an on the field entity are not as good as we are over the franchise period, they are not as good as we are with regard to attendances as we are over the franchise period - which should put us further ahead in an application regardless of what the RFL decide on community.

Take a junior side down for a weekend and see how games you get, last time i did we played the same team 3 times.

Not knocking the efforts made in London but past experience tells me otherwise.

Fair enough. Some excellent points made here. Nice to see a well structured and balanced argument, instead of the usual finger-pointing 'my club is better than your club', that we sadly so often see in RL. Great to see so many young Englishmen in your squad too, you should be heavily commended for that eusa_clap.gif

Good luck for the season, except when we play us again! icon_biggrin.gif I won't have you putting 50 points on us again! eusa_naughty.gif icon_lol.gif

For me, that's been the most pleasing thing about this season - many of the lads who are getting their chance at Wakey were being kept out of other teams by Aussie imports, so it's great to see the likes of Mariano, Johnson and Howarth proving their worth and playing with some pride and determination.
