| Quote: Redscat "Heppy also had a small fish and chip shop/cafe next door to the Dolphin at the bottom of Warrengate, I used to get some chips and mushy peas from Heppys and jump straight on the Flansher Flyer bus at the stop outside his shop. Great days!!
The Kingfisher f&c shop/cafe at Calder Grove was also Heppy's back in the sixties.
You had to be early at the Balne Lane Club on a Monday night when the Bushmen were appearing. It used to get absolutely packed. Who can forget the heart rending performance of the old Jewish weepie "My Mother's Eyes" when sung by Tony Costello. There wasn't a dry eye in the club.
He was a barber at the hairdresser's to go to, Esquires on Northgate opposite the Register Office.

Yeah, him and a Polish guy called Woskalo (used to live at the bottom of Gargrave Place, Lupset). Gave me short back and sides many a time. Until The Beatle Cut arrived.

Wasn't that a way of getting round the licensing laws or something.
Seem to remember you could only serve alcohol after a certain time if it was with food.
Remember it being a small portion of chips and one sausage.

You’re right it was and yes, a choice of two if I remember correctly, steak Canadian or sausage and chips.

There wouldn't have been many people brave enough to say that to his face back in the 80's or 90's.

They used to play at the Wakefield Arms also. Anybody remember another band who used to play there called the Zillionairs? Not a Jazz band more 50s and 60s classics? Anyone remember them, bass player was called Costello I thing.

Why? what's wrong with saying to someone they don't play with an aggressive style? I felt Garforth was one of those player who actually needed to display more aggression on the pitch, I think it would have made him a better player - that's what I was simply implying, not that he was ineffective!

Would that be Tony Costello? wasn't he the landlord there, or the landlord of another pub in Kirkgate? Sorry a bit vague, this age thing!

His son I think he was the bass player, they were pretty good musicians but not very original good pub band.

| I have not seen the film in ages but feel sure that the party house was on Barnsley road before it was demolished.

Tony Costello had the Wakefield Arms right up to closure I think. He played the piano and the Jazz nights at the pub were very popular. I noticed there was a scaffold around the building when I passed the other day. it seems like they're renovating it. The buiding has "listed" status having been one of the first in the world to be built using Portland cement. Joseph Aspdin (the inventor of Portland cement) had his works just around the corner on the site that became Kirkgate railway station). History lesson over
His brother, Pat, sang and played along with the Bushmen from time to time.

It was up for sale when I passed before the plague kicked in, glad that they are doing something with it as it was looking a bit of an eye sore.

| Before Tony Costello started playing with the bushmen, him and his wife used to drink in the Newton House Club where he was a member before it was knocked down and replaced by the Roundhouse.
