I'm a happy depressive - the glass is half empty but the bar is open.: |

Ian Hunter is 77 next month - 3rd June - still releasing great albums and doing great gigs
Some of my favourites :
Georgia Satellites - Reading Festival 1987 (and many times since and these days it's Dan Baird & Homemade Sin equally as good anywhere)
Queen at Live Aid 1986
Iron Maiden at Unity Hall 1980 as mentioned by others - support band Praying Mantis were great too and are still going
Twisted Sister - Christmas Show - Nokia Theatre, NYC 2008 - not a band I play a lot at home but a great live band

| Quote: bren2k "Sepultura, Pantera and Alice in Chains at Nottingham Rock City in the early 90's - not together, that would have been too much to take, but all 3 were brilliant and brutal; Pantera in particular was bordering on scary.
Radiohead in a circus tent in Warrington in October 2000 - amazing.
Jack White at the Leeds Arena in Nov 2014 - one of my idols, a brilliant musician and a fantastic show; and the support act from that night, Lucius, back in Leeds at the Brudenell Social Club a couple of weekends ago headlining their own tour - not my usual fare, but a brilliant live sound, and met them afterwards like a proper fanboy.'"
I was at that Jack White gig - and hated it! Probably the worst gig I've ever been to! Soul-less, pretentious, up his own 'arris, and I was so looking forward to it! Opinions eh?

I think gigs are a time and place/ state of mind sort of thing. We went to see The Cribs at Hull uni a couple of years since, three of us got relatively close to the stage, in the centre, we came out saying it's one of the best gigs We'd seen, the other three were stood at the back and hated every minute.
I mention a time and place/state of mind sort of thing, an instance here, as a kid I loved Joy division, we travelled all over the UK to watch them, I loved Unknown pleasures. I decided a while since to get the vinyl out and give it a play, I took it off after side one, it really did grate, what a disappointment.

I don't think Jack White has done anything that I haven't loved - he's one of my favourite people ever; so I was predisposed to enjoy it. I can't see how you get pretentious mind you; of all the criticisms that could be levelled at him, pretentious seems an odd one, but as you say - to each his own.
Can't beat live music - it's seen a resurgence thanks to the inability of musicians to make a crust out of records, and I'm pleased about that in a perverse kind of way.

| I've seen many many bands because of Spotify/downloading, if I'd have had to pay £10 per CD then I wouldn't have seen most of these. But that's a different thread altogether.

| I feel really sorry for you all that you had to see the likes of Led Zep and Pink Floyd yet missed out on Spice Girls.

| Up until two years ago, I would have said Green Day at Sheffield Arena in 2009 - but was completely blown away by Slash and the Conspirators in Nov 2014 at Leeds Arena.
Honorable mention for Frank White - used to play every Friday night at a pub in Sheffield, think it cost £2 to get in - we didn't miss for years - incredible Blues guitarist and singer.
I must say, I'm loving the taste in music being demonstrated on here!

| Cat Stevens supported by Family- Sheffield City Hall circa 72.
Name dropping now, last Wednesday, in Brooklyn, NYK, Gillian Anderson in Streetcar Named Desire, she did sing a little when acting drunk, however, taking her blouse off 8 times, and sometime about 6 foot away from us, beats all the bands and nearly sent me for another quadruple heart bypass

Seen some very entertaining bands over the years, Iron Maiden, ZZ Top, Anthrax, Slipknot but Kiss takes the biscuit. Seen them many times in arenas in a few countries but the July 4th Help For Heroes concert at the HMV Forum in Kentish Town was amazing, big band in a tiny venue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOMuG1kpk38

| I should also mention Nirvana at Bradford Uni in 1991 - moved from Queens Hall at short notice due to the album going mahoosive; support bands were Shonen Knife and someone else who I can't remember. A brilliant night - very intense. Some great bands played in Bradford in the grunge era.

| It would appear that I may have a spare ticket to see PiL in Wakey letter this month. Really looking forward to this with their recent music being really good for me!
I convinced the wife to buy shares in Unity and I'm really pleased with the way the music scene has taken off in Wakey in the past few years. Don't think we've seen anything like it since those early 80's - and I didn't see one of em, despite really liking Skids / Tourists / Pretenders....

| My heyday I guess would be 83/84 - living in Hammersmith I just had to see all those bands at the Odeon. ZZ, Scorps, JP, Marillion, Quo, Leppard! Quiet Riot, Judie Tzuke, Diamond Head (proper) and more.
Also made a couple of trips uptown to the Marquee club! Hanoi Rocks!

The first time I saw PIL was at a festival in Leeds, Futurama I think it was called, John Lydon sang for the first half hour behind a massive white sheet that had lights behind, after about 20 mins people were getting restless, throwing cans etc, actually wondering if it was JL. He came out with the big grin and asked something along the lines of "have you ever thought you'd been done" great front man.
As for the music scene in Wakey TRB it is getting to that level as seen in the 80's but this seems more prolonged and is of course spread over a couple of venues, I was there for all of those punk/indie gigs and it was a wonderful time, but the resurgence in venues in Wakey and the great quality bars (for us oldies) is great news and may it continue for a long long time!
