Shifty party anyway first and last time for me on here. I know what it gets like even among friends and family.

| Quote: REDWHITEANDBLUE "I actually work abroad as a peacekeeper in an International Peacekeeping Mission which is right on the front line between democracy and anarchy and in a location between Christianity and Islam. Terrorism threat here is low. But I would like to question you on why you think the UK should withdraw from spending abroad. I suppose you listen to the media at home that report on the sensational parts. I am not questioning your personal views or politics but just the foreign investment quote. We as a Nation are one of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council, that responsibility was gifted to us after the 2nd world war the aim is to keep peace in the world, some would say not very successfully but the UN generally goes in after a conflict as begun attempts to bring peace and assists with stabilisation. We pay a significant sum to the UN for the privilege. we are part of the EU and the EU also has a peacekeeping arm again we are members (and pay towards its costs) and have EU missions in respect of peacekeeping, these as you would imagine are more European based. Then there is humanitarian assistance, usually this is provided in the home state but as we all know at the moment in Syria there is a mass exodus of people trying to get out of the Middle East.
The best option would be to keep them there I would be interested in your strategy should funding stop by the UK and other nations to sort this out. From a UK point of view we have invaded all but 22 countries in the world and in each of those we have colonised we have left our mark some good some not so good, we cleaned them out of their assets in many cases. In the countries I have visited that have been part of the Empire or Commonwealth we have left infrastructure and in many cases a rule of law system that works. Compare that to say some of the French colonies in Africa and you will see a different picture.
We are very well respected in most of the world but we tend to do the right thing even though we do not always get it right.
So think about why we send money abroad the investment return is in exports and imports as well as overseas income probably better than being parochial on our little Island. The last thing is that in the UK there is a class of people who will never work and expect a standard of living to be provided ( I am not including people who are genuinely out of work and seeking employment that is a different issue). We have European people coming in because we have jobs that cannot be filled I accept some these are probably low paid but for me its better to work than not and working should be more than benefits.
I hope you dont mind me putting a view on this from out in the field.'"
A good well thought out post there mate, but.......I'd guess there are a lot of nations out there that despise us for our past interventions rather than appreciate it, even the Aussies hate us for deporting them and look what a lifestyle they have!
You only need to look close to home and see how people see us, the Scots, Welsh Republic of Ireland all dislike us and we're close neighbours.

I certainly don't mind because it's precisely what I think. Well said.

Wouldn't get too misty eyed thinking about the Australian lifestyle, I know quite a few people who have gone and come back. Even though they earn more, everything is expensive, healthcare, rent etc. If you're not in one of the big cities then there's not a lot going on in terms of things to do. Poor internet and public transport.
I don't think they hate us really either, bit of a tongue in cheek rivalry - they've kept the Union flag on their flag and the Queen as head of state for the last 200 years!

To be fair mate my Aussie reference was tongue in cheek.

| Redwhiteandblues post is indeed a considered well written post . However, why aren't these refugees being taken in by their closer neighbours e.g. UAE , Saudi etc. We can't look after the entire planet -it's impossible. I also know that nothing is black and white and there are plenty of grey areas. But on the face of it borrowing money to give to India ,who have a space programme and sending money to Bangladesh to help with their floods doesn't look very good on the face of it. That's without us inadvertently funding arms in Africa with our tax pound. When I boil it down to the basics I would much prefer that me and mine were looked after than some foreigner. Educate our kids, treat our sick, look after our own disadvantaged with our money. My son is a teacher in London and he has to try to educate kids who can't speak English ,spending a disproportionate amount of time with them to the disadvantage of our own kids. The nhs is short of money but 60% of the aids cases we treat are foreigners. We can't educate ,cure and look after the entire planet for God's sake.

| I read these posts with interest. And note that there has been the usual squabbling between the them and us Tory and labour voters. With people picking out ( and quite rightly) the many.... Let's call them mistakes.....the two main political parties have made...
But I'm afraid the ones to blame are the people who put an X in the box next to the dim wits name and the party they represent, that are as much to blame!
Until we get rid of the two main parties as political forces in this country and replace it with P R. Then the MISTAKES will only continue. But the reason that won't happen is because the Tories and labour don't want it... There power will be much reduced by people using their vote elsewhere knowing that that vote will of counted.
At the last election plenty voted green and ukip (rightly or wrongly) but their vote should of counted. Instead when we all went to bed that night, we all new who would be in charge..
We run atwo party system here and that suits the Tories and the equally inept labour dim wits just fine...WHY? Because they they know that as long as they kid you all along with the them versus us ideas it's them that will get the X in the correct box
With PR I think the bombing of Syria would not have been bungled through and and it would certainly put an end to the railroad policies of Tories and labour .they make that many cock ups and yet have to answer to know one
Happy squabbling!!!

The classic example of this at the moment is at Cambridge University. Foreign Students, some of them over here thanks to The Rhodes Scholarship, are leading a bid to have a statue of Cecil Rhodes pulled down. No doubt Churchill will be next on their list.

So was I - last time I checked, about 1/3 of UK infrastructure was owned by foreign governments; go figure.

| Wow this thread has kind of drifted since when I last looked.
From local politics & presumably how it impacts on the club, to the pro’s & cons of our elected champions.
Left, right, Red, Blue – they don’t mean jack, if people think the clowns at Westminster are running the show, well…

| I'm sure there is a forum for politics somewhere.
This thread should be about the council and how it affects Trinity.
