Think you should add internationals Gerry Round and Gary Cooper to the top of the list and also the vastly underrated Don Metcalfe.

Is Mathers a great full back? No, otherwise he wouldn't be at the club. Is he currently the best option the club has to play there? In my limited and unqualified opinion, yes.

About the length and bredth of it , I think we touched on this subject last season.

Just about to say Blaymire myself, decent full back. Funnily enough he was another player who got undeserved stick from some people.

Indeed he isn't most people think hes OK, which is just about right, anyone else such as yourself bagging him or making him out to be a sensational fullback are (i would say) in the minority - which makes you just as far off the mark as what you are suggesting others are.
He has his failings, he has his attributes - that puts him somewhere in the middle which is exactly where most fans see him.
If he were any better, we probably would be having this "debate" on another clubs forum.
Now find another player to pick on or bore off.

Obviously depending on age and opinion some of each group push the boudary to the next.
If I were being picky I'd nudge Geoff Wraith up to at least top of middle group and I thought Harcombe was better than the others in his group.

Good comparison though and Mathers is somewhere in the middle ofthe middle group.

Full back role has changed over that time too so difficult to compare to Mathers directly

I would like to add Paul White to the worst list. I remember one game away at Salford in 2006 when he had an absolute nightmare.

Mathers is ok, he is not brilliant but he is an average SL fullback which in our current situation is the best we could hope for. (That is unless Max Jowitt gets a chance)

He looked good in the 5 shirt on sunday and not at all out of place with the grown ups, bagged a pretty good try too

for Max to even get a mention just shows what a player we have in the making
