Quote: bren2k "I think JK is being a bit mischevious lately when it comes to WTW; he made a comment on TV recently about how we should be challenging for the 8 given the money that we've spent for this season, which in real terms, only amounts to about 100k more than he had at his disposal, so a little bit disengenuous.

As for these comments - he knows full well that a groundshare wouldn't work and is not wanted by either set of fans and, given the sensitivity of the PI decision, he'll know that his comments could add fuel to the anti-argument; in my view, he should keep his nose out and his trap shut.'"

I'm not sure it is you know.

As for the merger talk - head says it's the most sensible way forward, even if heart objects; if St George Illawara Dragons can work, I see no reason that the Wakefield Castleford Panthers couldn't.

It would take people like us to die off though, before it became a success; I'm certain that my son would go watch a successful team in a fancy stadium, because he likes his rugby league and he likes watching winners, and no doubt he'd take his kids and that's how the next generation of diehards is born - just that they'd be diehard supporters of a new team.

I know it's heresy, but the prospect of one club benefitting from the young players we produce in the district and harnessing the latent support that exists for RL, is positively mouthwatering; I think the RFL would be cock-a-hoop if it happened, and we might find their attitude towards the venture would be extremely positive - certainly they'd have less of a headache come franchise time.

Out of interest if Opus are trying to secure a deal on another site (and obviously dealing with another company) why would they still want to fund a stadium for Cas at GH? Surely the money will go to the other company (Nestle Rowntree is the rumour?) with Opus taking their cut? The WR deal (for houses i take it?) would surley just be a seperate thing. How are they linked? Are Opus just loaning the money once the deals are done cos i'm sure they will not be doing it out of the goodness of their heart. There has to be something in it for them.

Not all oldsters are against a merger.
I have supported for over 50 years and am frustrated at the lack of acheivment since the heady days of the sixties.
Before anyone comes in with --- but you live in France---- I can state that I have probably spent more on the club than most on this forum.
Further to that I still do still contribute and get over to watch when ever I can ---- when the wife allows.
Newmarket is the perfect venue being almost equidistant from both sets of fans.
The real problem has always been the name in my opinion.
Trinity Tigers is fine as someone previously suggested but the problem there is we need the name of Wakefield to promote both club and city, or metropolitan area.
A really successful club allied to the ongoing regeneration would really put Wakefield back on the map and more able to compete with the ever encroaching Leeds.
But what could we call the new club?

Maybe John can answer why Wakefield played boring rugby under him while Batley were a joy to watch last night.

I think a merged club could be far more successful than either club individually could ever dream of being.
However i am happy to hold back that success in line with the rest of the proud supporters of each club!!

TBH I think Frogcats 500k is close.

I'm not sure why you think it's as little as 100k when AG said he intended to spend up to or close the the cap. No way were we near cap last year.

Added to this last years star signings were Jeremy Smith and Tommy Lee with Morrison and Rinaldi adding the bulk of the SL experience - no dis-respect but there is not a huge amount of cash there, the rest ware a real bargain mix.

Since then we have signed, Tim Smith, Collis, Aiton, John and Southern - all players who could get an NRL birth at a push - they don't come cheap.

Ellis, Wilkes, Raleigh, Washbrook, Fox, Kirmond, Mellors etc were all SL regulars last years and far from cast offs. Again, not cheap.

Big Ali may no longer command super star wages but again won't come cheap either.

You start adding that lot together compared to last year and 500k sounds very reasonable indeed - in which case JK has a point. Whether he'd have produced a better team if he'd have got that 500k is debatable.

I heard last seasons spend was about £800K, and AG said we would be spending around £1.2, so i make Frogcat and Vastman about right.
The season previous however was about £1.1 so this is where comparisons IMO should be made, and when JK states i'd love to coach that side, he did and we were gash!!
