I agree with you entirely, Wilkes is the sort of player every team needs. If you look at all the more successful teams they have players like Wilkes who may not be flash but do the hard yards. Mossop at Wigan and Grix at Warrington spring to mind.

In all fairness to mossop I think he's a bit better than that. If I had the pick of all wigans props he'd be my choice.
