Ben Ross

represented Tonga 4 times
Feleti Mateo

Brett Kimmorley
Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs scrum half, off contract at the end of 2010
no introduction needed
still playing to an unbelievably high standard and possesses the organisation and kicking skills that we currently lack
Will Chambers
former Melbourne Storm centre now playing rugby union, for the Queensland Reds in the super 14s
on a rolling one-year contract
22 years old
6'2" - 15st 7lbs
once heralded as the next Greg Inglis, injury forced him out of the Melbourne squad and into rugby union
James Tamou
North Queensland Cowboys prop, second row, off contract at the end of 2010
21 years old
6'4" - 17st 7lbs
A big prospect in every sense of the word, made his first grade debut as a 17-year-old but has only made a handful of appearances since then. Well thought off and there would be competition for his signature.
And then of course there's my old favourite Arana Taumata!
Currently signed with West Tigers, and apparently doing well both on and off the field but can't get a run at first grade. IMO , he would be an absolutely fantastic and well timed signing for our current team.
I don't know who does the scouting for the club but these are the sort of players that we should and may well be aware of.'"
Missed off the former 'next Sonny Bill' Karlos Filiga currently not playing first grade in Oz

| Quote: gowerthegroap "Who are you kidding?! Yes we've just come out of a recession, but there is no doubt we must have a fair wedge of spare cash sat there doing nothing right now. The crowds are not that different to last year, yes the players that have moved on for various reasons have in the main been "replaced" in the slackest sense of the word, but the the two logically largest earners have not. We received a transfer fee for Atkins, there was a reported transfer fee for Brough, and as far as i'm concerned, in the main, the salaries of Brough and Drew are still unaccounted for. So feeding us the pony about financial circumstances just won't cut it.
I'm not saying we have are in the position to pick who we want because we all know it doesn't work like that, but to say we're in financial strife must be attributed to mismanagement and that alone. I don't have figures and I don't claim to be in the know, but logic alone stipulates that we should not be in the position you paint we are in.'"
Well clearly not you!
Of course you'll be well aware of the fact that businesses are falling over themselves to provide funding for local organisations and that they are top heavy with cash right now - having now seen off the recession!
I'm not trying to pull the wool over anyone here - it is tough trading out there and we must trade within our means. I do hope that we will see some new blood, but it isn't going to be the shopping spree some would like to see!

| We need to ensure the youngsters who show real potential are given a slice of the pie so we don't end up getting the big guys coming in and plundering the larder. ala Pitts.
We seem to be moving in the right direction with the youngsters but we do not want to lose anyone else. God forbid.

We must have planned for Newton, Brough & Tronc to be here all season though, so what would have happened to us if they hadnt gone???
I understand what you are saying with regards to the recession etc but if we didnt have the sponsorship funds at the start of the season we shouldnt have still been trying to sign players (Paul King) so late on. Alternatively if a sponsor has not come forward with the promised cash then this should somehow be communicated back to the fans. Even if its just at an Audience with or something.
As supporters all we can see is 3 of the rumoured top earners leaving and been replaced by various cheaper options. I dont for one minute doubt our board are doing what they feel is best for the club but i can see why people get dissilusioned by it all.
In the last 2 years we have supposedly been bidding for the likes of Greg Bird & Sean Long and more recently offering Brough the biggest contract in the clubs history yet a few months later we dont have the funds to replace the players that have left??????

Agreed - I don't think that's unreasonable at all and, FWIW, I too think an 'Audience With..' or even just a meeting with Ted & Co would not go amiss right now. I will pass on!

Think this post sums up how a lot of us fans feel, my big bug about all this is the timing of it all, ie mid season, think I could have coped with it in the off season but not now.

Spot on.
For me it's always been the same. Big players leave and everyone gets excited about the prospect of new signings with the money we've made or freed up in wages, then nothing happens.
Look at when Ellis left. Didn't we get 200k for him and free his wage up? Where did that money go?

Choose one of;
[list
[*The building just of Doncaster Road[/*
[*Ted's M&S Suits[/*
[*Invested into the club to improve off field issues, pay off existing debt and employing playing staff to ensure the club punches above it's weight with respect to income from the terraces and merchandise. [/*[/list
The Ellis/Solomona thing has been done to death. Next you'll be asking where the Atkins money has gone?
Brough has gone, Trinity need a replacement however are there any available right now who fit the bill. Tronc has gone, a replacement is being sought after, yet is there anyone available who will be of the same quality and what’s to come to the club. Things are not black and white.

That was exactly my point. If you compare this seasons squad to last, you can logically match up the players going out to the players coming in. The two exceptions to that are Brough and Drew. Yes we all know what happened to Newton, and obviously, he was the sensible replacement to Drew, but to date, his salary remains unaccounted for. It is well documented that the offer made to Danny Brough was the biggest in the clubs history, an offer that was negotiated through the comings and goings of Drew and Newton not instead of. I am aware that we now have Paul Cooke on our books, and reading between the lines, he doesn't come cheap, but even on a large salary he isn't earning the combined income of Brough and Drew/Newton. You don't need to know the financial workings of the club, nor claim to being an accountant, to work out that there must be spare money available.
There isn't a mass of players there waiting for WTW to come a calling, we don't have that appeal, we are just not that club. The point i'm making is, if we don't have spare money available, and we can't afford to bring in new players, why?

| I don't profess to know anything about the salaries of players, but surely when the gain of Drew's salary is accounted for then consideration has to be given to incoming players eg Morrison, BJ, Millard etc

| ok, look at it this way, on a like for like basis, a rough look at the comings and goings.
INCOMING / OUTGOING
Brough / Cooke
Newton / Drew
Morrison / Snitch
Tronc / Stosic
Millard / Atkins
King / Wilkes
Jeffries / Grix
Gledhill / Pitts
Hyde / Southernwood
Johnson - +1 on last years squad, rolling contract as stated pre season
Kirmond - +2 on last years squad, salary paid by Huddersfield
7 academy players
If the fee for atkins went on the tax bill, that's fair enough. If i've missed any, I apologise. But unless Cooke is being paid in excess of 150k and Johnson is on in excess of 80k then i'd say it's a pretty safe bet we've got a few quid to spare.
I'm simply making the point that there should very well be money available. If there isn't then there are bigger troubles than the playing staff ahead.

I think fans like yourself need to pull your heads out of the sand and realise this year we have lost 3 players on big contracts and not replaced them, you can talk rubbish about the recesion all day long but these 3 salaries will have been in this years cash flow forecasts so in reality is money available to spend unless they work on a "hope the cash comes in to cover the bills" basis which I am afraid if that's the case we do not deserve to be in business

| Some fair points being made regarding income and outgoings etc.....
But just lets say we do have circa £100k wage available.
Who would you sign?
Player has to be firstly available and secondly want to come.
If a player is available at this moment,i would doubt he is a player that merits a £100k salary, more chance that he is a fringe player.
If hes a fringe player he is unlikely to add any quality over and above what we already have -- so whats the point of signing him.
If the player isnt available --- do we want to pay a fee? Highly unlikely!!!!!
Personally if we are in the market looking at fringe players -- aka Charlie Laeona,i would prefer us to use what we have at our disposal, rather than spend money on another overseas player.Or if we dont have players capable of the step up just yet, maybe look at a season loan from a fringe player at another club.
