| Quote Prince Buster="Prince Buster"Quote Prince Buster="Prince Buster"can you remember Gareth Ellis ? he went to Leeds for less than he was offered at Wakey. With some players it can be more than money. I know we have offered a very good contract but he is not accepting it so it must be something we can't offer.
Plus does anyone honestly think he would turn us down if he had no other options on the table. Anyone who thinks Saints have not approached him is either under 4yrs old or living in cloud Cuckoo land. There is no way anyone can accuse MC or the club for not trying their utmost.'" '"
Wakefield sold Gareth Ellis. Initial money wasn't great for wakefield but they nicked the boxing day fixture from Cas as part of the agreement for the next 3 years which earned them an extra 50k plus a year.

| I’ve said before … but to reiterate… I’m happy to enjoy Lewis as a Wakey player now… this season…
The future will look after itself, with or without him.
Here in Aus players sign contracts with new clubs for 12 months hence and play full seasons and with full commitment for the teams they are a part of. Players staying at clubs for their careers is really rare now.
Plus we still get a fee if he moves on at the end of his contract!

From what I understand he hasn’t asked for anything even close to £100k - I asked vasty a couple of weeks back what he though Murphy’s worth was; but he didn’t reply - easily missed as the thread was about something else - what do you feel is a fair salary for someone of Murphys talent/stage of development?
If the requested figure I was told is correct; then I can’t believe the contract wasn’t drawn up & signed on the same day!

| Given the fact of relegation this year, there are no negatives to this story.
I suspect the St Helens rumour has only come up because he bears a resemblance to Regan Grace in looks and playing style.
From Lewis's perspective, he would be mad to sign now. If he continues in the way he has, he will be worth a lot more in a year than he is now. For that to happen, he'll need to have another cracking season, which will be to our benefit. If he doesn't progress as we think, we will have been proved right in not making an offer we can't afford.
We will either have him for a great year or avoided saddling ourselves with someone who hasn't lived up to the hype. That's a win-win.
We might end up losing him, but if that means he helped to keep us in Super League, so be it. I can live with that.

| Its an hard season ahead for Lewis. First of all he as got to prove that he is not a one season wonder, as the 2nd season syndrome can catch out the best of players and teams. like what as been said in earlier threads going to a bigger club could mean he is down the pecking order. Also will he get the same service of quality ball from a new centre / wing partnership, although I must admit that should be no problem with teams like stains. Then there is the the commute or relocate situation which can effect stability. Lots for him to consider before signing a CONtract.

Who accepts the first offer anyway? Give the process time.

| Theres 5 months before the season deadline for players to be spoken to by other clubs. At the end of the day its up to Murphy what he sees as acceptable and the best for his future no matter what the club offer him.

| Apparently Lewis Dodd is out of contract.
I'd happily do a swap if Murph wants to go.
Yes I know. I'll get my coat.

No idea where you got that idea. Dodds current contract runs until the end of 2024, with an option in Saints favour to extend a further 2 years to 2026 - https://www.saintsrlfc.com/2022/06/14/s ... -contract/
Saints have off contract this year; Matty Foster, Konrad Hurrell, Sione Mata'utia, James Roby, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Dan Norman, Sam Royle, Lewis Baxter, James Bell, Daniel Hill, Will Hopoate, Curtis Sironen, Jake Wingfield, Taylor Pemberton, Jumah Sambou, Mckenzie Buckley.
There’s also Ritson whose loan contract expires.
Of these, Saints have an option on Sironen and Hopoate (though I, along with the majority of the fan base are hoping the latter doesn’t get exercised, or rather he has to do a lot this year to make it even a consideration).
You then have Roby and LMS whom are both expected to retire., and I doubt Saints would send them away for their final year (though we did do it with Amor, so it’s possible LMS could be moved on, especially as he faces a lot of competition for his spot, with George Delaney being called up to England Knights before establishing himself in our first team, and Norman being in the final year of his contract, and him graduating the same education Bentley and Batchelor went through).
Hurrell, Mata’utia and Bell round out the senior players in the list, and their decisions will dictate how much recruitment we need to do vs how much we can focus on nice to haves in our squad.
Wingfield and Norman are both excellent backup props for us, but as mentioned above Delaney is pushing his way through the ranks and both need to really lay claim to a starting spot (though Wingfield could also replace Bell as a back up lock). Baxter is also a young prop, but seems much further away from being picked than the others.
That leaves the kids. Royle is an excellent leader, having captained the club at every age group when he captained the first team over Easter vs Castleford last year. Ended the year on loan to HKR and seemed to impress but not sure what his path to being a genuine first team option is, as he lacks a bit of size and presence for a forward. Pemberton is apparently heir apparent alongside Lussick to replace Roby but that is a huge jump for him to have to make. Buckley, Sambou and Hill all played games for us last year and Buckley and Sambou could possibly feature more regularly next year too (Bruines joining us most likely blocks Hill from game time).
As I said, Saints were happy to negotiate, and I could have seen something like Norman + Royle going in exchange for Murphy, but there was no negotiation to be had.

| With some players it's not all about money. The likes of Saints and Wigan offer a player a good chance of winning cups/titles. Sometimes this is as much, if not more of a draw.
