Great to see Sammut on the pitch at last .....pity we've had to watch Owen on it again though .

Webster has two decisions to make.

Halfbacks - while Miller is solid and shows glimpses Sammut can change a game with his off the cuff play. If true to word it's based on form you can only see smith and Sammut starting. It's about time Sammut got his run in the team. With one friendly left I hope to see this happen.

Wing - Riley no brainer but Johnstone is really showing up well. He's strong, quick and seems to have a ton of potential early days. Owen has the experience so that's a tough call there.

On the game - 4 disallowed try's. 3 of which were perfectly good in my opinion and think everyone was baffled by that. Fev played well and will go well in their league.

We looked organised for the most part. Most of devs points came from errors but how anyone can blame Owen for that crazy kickoff is beyond any common sense. It came down in front of Kirmond after a wicked turn. The only mistake Owen made was when he failed to deal with the cross field kick but people will naturally scapegoat.

Hall looks very good at full back.

Not really but not a great turnout of Trinity supporters either.

I couldn't go today.
Who looked good? Did the forwards from last week look fitter?

Thought our defence was good in the middle. Fev struggled to make metres in their sets and only benefited from mostly the ref errors and a few of our own. Sammut did a howler of a pass. Kirmond was too far away in those conditions to do that. 2 moved up quick from the kick off and if he had gone on his own there was a good opportunity. Johnstone on the wing looks a good prospect. Think Sykes first man out didnt work mostly for fev.

Not really, the forwards kind of cancelled each other out which given Fev's part time status could be a worry although given the amount of changes made in the game it's difficult to get a true gauge. Hall and Johnstone looked good going forward, surely the youngster has now inked himself in ahead of Owen who didn't do himself any favours again. Kirmond looked more liked the 2013 version rather than the one we saw last year. Sammut looked lively when he came on and would be my pick over Miller who is solid but doesn't really offer any real threat himself meaning all the pressure is on Smith. I suppose it depends whether Webster just wants the stand off position as a supporting role, if so then he'll go with Jacob.

There is still plenty to be worked on over the next 4 weeks though, bear in mind Fev are part time and were without all their overseas players and bar Kirke it was our full strength team. It was though a step forward from boxing day, albeit not a big one, we were fairly solid for the most part. The camp this week will be important to work on the timing, communication and combinations and i'd hope to see a good all round performance come the Hull friendly.

I did not go but based on Sammut scoring 2 and giving the last pass for one more, can anyone give a reason why he appears to not be rated by Webster. We all know Miller intends to stay only one season because we can only afford him because Hull are contributing towards his salary so I believe, and it is only my opinion is that Sammut is a better long term prospect.

Part of the problem with Sammut is that he is at his best in broken play with exciting off the cuff work.
If you are planning a disciplined attacking structure it doesn't always work with Sammut.
I'm not saying he can't do it and I'm not saying Miller is better but to me that is his flaw.

As an example, Sykes was not as exciting but was good for the strucure we needed at the time.

Sammut's flaw is the same flaw that meant Moore was unpopular. He was exciting but found it hard to stick to the game plan so was not always popular with his coaches.

So someone who does not stick rigidly to the game plan will also cause problems for the opposition coach as they could not possibly plan to nullify their threat?
The great Harold Poynton wouldn't get a game today as he didn't even know what he was going to do next!
Its called 'genius!

Tom Johnstone has been superb in both games. He looks like an accomplished wingman who understands the roles and responsibilities of the position he plays, he's also strong and very fast.

I know he's young but at this moment in time he's our 2nd choice winger at worst, the decision between him and Owen is a simple one right now!

Disagree with the comment of our forwards just cancelled each other out, we totally dominated in that area, Fev only got in to our half thanks the the skill of Mr Child and his fantastic refereeing performance, we should have had 4 more tries on the board and I hope this isn't an indication of how the season is gonna be refereed. Craig Hall was outstanding and was easily MOM although if Reece Lynne had been allowed his hat trick then he would have run him close, Johnstone took very good and Annakin looks immense this year. As for Fev being part timers, there is enough written in the RL press and on forums confirming that most of the top championship sides are full time so just because they were missing a couple of important players, that was still as strong a side that Fev could have fielded.
All in all pretty happy with the game and performance, just the ref that spoilt a 50+ score line from the trin a026.gif

What a bizarre sentence.
1) You've read in the press that Leigh, Bradford and London are full time so that must mean Fev are too? I'm sure a lot of the Fev lads will be delighted to hear they don't have to go to their day jobs tomorrow morning and can just turn up at Post Office Road instead!

2) You say that Fev were missing " a couple of important players" (3 of our 4 overseas imports plus 2 or 3 others from our likely starting 17 as it happens) and then you say it was still as strong a side as Fev could have fielded? d040.gif
