Rip Rocky a great player and captain of a great team

RIP Rocky, as a kid I watched you play for Trin and later was grateful to you for being a winning coach at Cas.

Never had a player/captain of his stature since his retirement. Never will.

I was lucky enough to see him play .

Perhaps one of the greatest players to never publish his biography. Would be great if someone could, it would make a fantastic read.

I don't know if it's apocryphal or genuine, but wasn't there a tale that during the filming of This Sporting Life, the Director asked Rocky to go a bit harder at Richard Harris, to give the scene some verisimilitude - so he clattered Harris, landed him in Pinderfields and shut down filming for the rest of the day?

Like many on here I was lucky to see turner at his peak ,never above 14stone but as an enforcer as vast man says there was no better when Aussie greats like johnny raper describes him as the hardest player he'd faced. Vasty talks about mal reilley another great loose forward who came under Derek's influence at cas and I can assure you he modelled himself both as a player and a coach on rocky . His pre match team talks Saturday lunchtime in Talbot and falcon were legendery and lads like budgie firth and mal Sampson were ready to face owt better to face a fierce Wigan or saints pack or an unhappy rocky who never looked forward to loosing pay RIP dereck

I remember watching the great man,i can recall the fighting with the aussie tourists I think it was 63/64they won 29-14 neil fox kicked 7 goals,they knew they had been in a game,i recall reading the Yorkshire post when rocky had been dropped by great Britain who went on to get beat,and then was made captain of Yorkshire,who beat the aussies,it was said that rocky told all the Yorkshire team,let me do the rough stuff you play the game,one thing people forget about him he could kick a ball in open play,RIP ROCKY

Have I missed something here - I know the great man has passed but the silence about his passing is deafening!
Perhaps it may be at the request of his family that no public announcement has been made, I don't know but I cannot help thinking if it had been a Wigan or Leeds 'great' we would have had it stuffed down our throat.
Never though that DT got the recognition he deserved, as far as I am concerned his status as a RL player is up at the top.

The best loose forward I've ever seen,When I was playing Amateur under 17s rugby in 1957, I used to try and style my game on Rocky. I think he was playing for Oldham then. At that time Whiteley and Karalius were top loose forwards but Rocky Turner was the best. RIP
