| Quote: PopTart "but that is a frustration of mine that last year people moaned that we had too many pivots on the field, yet now want Aiton at loose to accommodate another hooker.
Although Aiton is a special case, with Washnrook being a pivot type back row I don't really like it. BUT I'm not so against it that I'd say no, just that it worries me. I'd rather have big running second rowers like Ali and Kirmond, or a tackling machine like Southern with either Aiton or Washbrook at loose.
Unfortunately Aiton and Washbrook are on form and must be picked somewhere.......which in my opinion pushes Wood or Ellis out..........and I like Wood.
So its then a toss up between John and Ellis......it goes on.
I'm all for finding the best team but at the moment, I'd like a consistent team.'"
Thats where you post lost its credibilty, you must have included that on pure heresay because as yet no one has seen any tangable evidence to justify that description

TBF he was in game one v Widnes, but I have to agree little evidence of it since.

Yes I agree, was that a one off or are all the other games his true worth ?
Anyhow just had a quick look at the stats and Raleigh,Aiton and Washbrook are way infront of him as 'tackling machines'.
You and me are probabaly at the stage where we only accept what we witness with our own eyes and are well past the days where we buy all the hype and crap about what players are supposed to be before they arrive at the club.
Its what they deliver in a Trinity shirt that counts for me.

NGBC only backs named players, seems to absolutely hate any player who is a: Local b: Come up through the Academy c: Isn't a Samaon d: is a forward under 6"10 and thus a midget.
I like young Trout but to say both Ellis and him are an unknown quantity is a bit off the mark Ellis has a proven track record in SL after all he was Quins player of the season

| I must say I don't rate trout on what I have seen and I'm not sure he has what it takes to be a SL regular.
Can't see him offering anything other than a solid SL player at best.
Despite that I don't believe he has fully had the chance at SL level yet. Hopefully my opinion is proved wrong.

TBF they have all spent a hell of a lot more time on the field than he has.
This game looks like one of those classics we get absolutely murdered in; on Sky and against a side we should have a chance against. I wouldn't be surprised if we got niled

Trout is still very young for a forward. I have been watching him a number of years and I think he has what it takes. I don't know how far he'll go in the game and like you I believe he may just make a good honest clubman. But we need those types of player especially when they are your own.

You and i have seen many tackles over the years and its not hard to rack up a few tackles, some players hurt players when they tackle others don't.
I would suggest that while they all count i would rather be hit by some and avoid others if i could. I reckon that although he's not set the world a light yet Southern falls into the latter.
It seems he's not 100% right yet for whatever reason but i think a fully fit and focused Southern is something that i look forward to seeing.

As far as the stats are concerned, is it still the case that 3rd man in gets credited with the tackle too? If so, it's not really a tackle stat, is it? As you say, the poor bugger who does the bone crunching gets no more credit than the last one to flop on top.

I agree with you. Southerns tackling is very hard and he stops them dead. Though I am not impressed with the amount of time he spends on the field we are far better defensively when he is on the field. I just hope he is fully fit for the Saints game and as captain spends at least 60 minutes on the pitch.

That makes two of then don't believe tackle stats hold water thats all.
Anyway back to Saturdays game and the squad, i would play Walshaw at centre and not push him into the second row and if that means dropping a star centre then so be it.

he is not in the squad. Kirmond would be one centre for me as he is only one to have looked like one so far this season. Mellars needs 'resting' and I am not sure if Collis has been fit yet all season.

Then a decent coach should find it pretty simple. Give the guy who's crocked time to get fit, give the guy who's underperforming time in the reserves, and give the guys who are going well in the U20s a chance to show what they can do. It's not like we're going to get relegated. The whole point of franchises on the playing side is supposed to be to bring the young British players through. They don't have to play a whole season, but a couple of games and a sniff of blood won't do them any harm. At least they'll know the level they have to aim at.
