| Quote: TRB "I haven't even heard his name until earlier today, and certainly don't know if there is any truth in this, but I am old enough and wise enough to hear what those who are responsible for this type of thing think of the player before I make any judgement.
So he's not playing NRL - we have no idea why that is the case. We have a young English lad we are trying to sign who wasn't even good enough for our neighbours, but we think differently. Gareth Ellis couldn't buy a club at one stage; Aaron Murphy came from the Leeds set up - there are loads of examples where we have proved that our judgement is good in these matters - and that's all it is, judgement.
At the age quoted, this lad sounds ready for first team football. The truth is that most of our rising stars are not - yet, and it will take a year or two to get there. I fully understand the reasons why folk would not be as keen on this signing, but let's get some facts before we condemn!
The judgmental nature of some on here beggars belief - do they never ever learn. Is no one ever worth a chance to these clowns. Have they not learnt from the likes of Moore, Wilkes and Brough or Garen Cassey to learn that not all good players come via the SL or NRL.
It's probably the same people who call JD a legend, a player who NEVER played NRL in his life and who played for the Dolphins in Oz who I believe are a lesser grade than Newtown who are the next league from NRL.
Do some people never think - it's threads like this that remind me why I don't post much anymore.
Trinity must have a few more enlightened fans that some who inhabit this forum.
Iknow I sound pompous, patronising and snobbish but it does my head in sometimes the same old guff. I know what the replies will be and if there was a better forum I would

| Can't speak for anyone else, but the only way our national game can ever catch up to the Aussies and who knows surpass them, is to get as many youngsters coming through into SL. Therefore these kind of signings have to stop.
The very best of our kids learning from "top" nrl and SL players, an end to overseas mediocrity.
I accept that not everyone cares about the national team, but surely everyone cares about young British talent getting the best tuition and the best opportunities, at our clubs.

| Totally agree Kinley Cat we as a club, as a league as a nation should not be signing players of this ilk. We then wonder why we as a nation never beat the Aussies, when players of his calibre are taking the places of young English lads.

But which of our youngsters is losing out - IF we sign such a player? The only way they will lose out if we become uncompetitive, crowds dwindle, the stadium crashes and we end up out of SL.
I also think that need to be realistic here. We have had plenty of players who are English, who have turned their backs on us to go elsewhere. We also now have an English prop - who is now out on loan, having been deemed not good enough. I'm sorry, but whilst I remain supportive of the principal of improving our national squad (which I believe we are doing - nationally and at club level), we must not make the mistake of putting this too far ahead of the quality issue - i.e. you cannot develop good players if they play in a weak side or a weak competition.
When we, as a club and as a game, can produce 'Charlie's' in sufficient quality and quantity that they end up in our National Leagues, then the rules can be tightened up once more - and this may not be too far in the future - but right now even the likes of Frank Winterstein are better than the players we can replace with him with IMO (of course).

| truth be told i couldn't really give a toss if he's from timbuktu, if he comes in and improves the team he''ll do for me. as TRB says, where are all these players that he is keeping from having a chance (assuming he does sign). kear has a track record of taking players from the lower leagues so i can rest assured that he has been looking for possibilities from there again but not seen anything that he wants to take a chance on. we are not a club who can take anything but well calculated risks

"ilk" jesus wept
What calibre is this then. Are you seriously suggesting JK would bring over such a player if he didn't consider him better than what is available in the UK. No one IMO wants to push British players more than him, but clearly only if they are in his opinion ready.
Added to that who are these youngsters who are missing out, there are no props at Trinity ready to step up just yet. There are no available props left in SL especially when people like you aren't even willing to give a player with Kings playing record a chance. What do you think we can do, nip over and but James Graham, let's get real. So why not take a flyer on a player from a competition that is far superior to ours and has far more depth.
In other words why not try and find another player of JD's ilk or is he not the calibre we want

I think it's also worth noting that the Newtown Jets are the official feeder club for the Roosters. So if there players are good enough for the Roosters they will do for me. The ignorance of some on here about how the NRL works is shocking. Some players especially forwards can spend years in the reserve grades before bursting on the scene, some have even gained caps. Not saying this guy is one of those but playing in that league certainly puts you on a par with most SL players.
