At the time our full back needed to be rock solid in defence. Don't reckon Holland missed many one on ones and was faultless under the high ball. |

Very few and like he said his defensive game was spot on but a full back needs to be more than a ball catching brick wall in the modern game.

Have to say - I reckon he was best at FB and, whilst I do rate both Martyn Holland and Matty Blaymire, I was also very much a fan of Halpenny and was very disappointed that he didn't stay around longer.
FTR - I chose him as my player of the year in 2006 as I felt he was our most consistent performer during that period - and that tackle on Pat Richards was superb!

I have to say when Halpenny went to fullback i was dubious, but he brought an exciting attacking edge which we had lacked as well as being quite good defensively. I'd love to have seen him play another season maybe even two

Correct.
Halpenny is another player like Korki who's reputation far exceeds his ability and contribution IMHO. Yes I rated him and he did a good job but for me that don't make him a great player.
For me Holland was the best and despite what some seem to think scored a reasonable number of tries. It is often said that Blaymire doesn't make those barnstorming runs from and that's true he doesn't. Neither did Halpenny.
We have never had such a player at BV since the zip zip man played for us and he was running on one leg by the time we got him. We have had a few wingers in Sov and Frew etc who have made a half decent effort.
What thankfully we have always had in my time of watching is great defensive F/B's which is what we have needed. Spencer, Leeds, Holland and now Blaymire - steady but probably never spectacular. |

I see no problem at all in bigging up these guys - they are ALL very good at what they do - hence they get paid for running around a rugby pitch and I sit behind a desk!  |
