Some people dig up the old "bought the ground for a quid" tale, the £1 was the deposit, the club then stumped up a great amount of money shortly after, not too sure it wasn't £265,000.

So it wasn't due to a "structural" issue as you claimed in your first post then?

Just to add to Fully's previous post - we have also paid for all the stadium modifications this season without relying on the good will of certain supporters who do the work for nowt.

Good for you, and us.
Can't see any issue with that.

Quote: JINJER "I do tend to agree with you but I personally put this down to patronising Cas fans, you're team and fans only two years since we're going through exactly the same as us both on and off the field, yet to here the Cas fans talk they are the perfect rugby club with no problems, we get them on this board holding the flag of peace yet packing a six shooter, that's may take on it for what it's worth not that we don't have our own brand of idiots!A sincere lack of dignity on some Cas fans part.'"

Whilst I can see your point, 12 months ago I have no doubt that some Wakefield fans were lauding about Cas being in the rubbish too. That's what you get with local rivals and it will always become a point scoring exercise.

I don't think any Cas fan will say that everything is perfect or peachy; in fact, we know that Wheldon Road as a ground isn't fabulous and we need a new stadium for many reasons. In terms of team performance, we have exceeded expectations but we're not invincible.

However, mud-slinging and posting mistruths benefits no-one really. Cas have worked tirelessly over the off-season to meet H and S requirements and go that extra mile to make sure everything is up-to-date. They've also cut a lot of contracts and renegotiated things in the business to raise extra cash. We have improved considerably but there are always ways to continue improving.

It's unfortunate that this has hit Wakefield prior to the season but at least - with the help of invaluable volunteer time - they have been able to save a few quid and get ahead of the game for the remaining time you have at Belle Vue.

That's not patronising. It was just a question; his first comment related to structural issues. After discussing, we've agreed it was a floodlight issue.

Right Everyone back to original post.

Just had it confirmed the council bought Belle Vue for £165K

Sold it back to the club for £1 on signing contracts and balance of £250K paid
by club to council on completion of contract.

Council made a profit of £85K

Club got back a smaller ground than they sold along with condemned floodlights
and a large bill for 'works' carried out by council.

Good old WMDC such fine fellows.

Ha Ha, it was a health and safety issue within Wheldon Rd which is what I said earlier also the floodlights are structural so the answer to your question is yes it was structural.

Quote: Inflatable_Armadillo "A mutual friend of ours, who knows the full facts, is clear about this. The club bought the ground back from the council for a much larger amount than the council bought it from the club for originally. It is a complete myth that the club were sold the ground back for a minimal amount. The council and therefore Wakefield residents made a profit from the whole deal, and it was a significant profit for the time. It is not clear if it was sold back at the current best market value, given land values did continue to rise, so maybe not and that is maybe where this whole myth came from, but they still paid back much more than they got for it!

He also has told me that the what you and Jack in the Box have posted is correct, not only did they make a profit they also did slap a very large bill into the club after it was bought back for 'works to the ground'.'"

Thanks IA.

Just blows the myth that the Council have been especially good to us.

Made a profit on the deal, condemned our floodlights leaving us with a big bill for replacement floodlights and of course they are being particularly helpful as we speak. I love this Council and they will get my vote on 22nd May.

Quote: Scarlet Pimpernell "In order to avoid upsetting those who must be obeyed I decided to start a thread to answer the question of the wooden stand as I remember it. When we were going through one of our financial problems many years ago the then Labour council in order to keep us going agreed to buy the ground which caused them a great deal of problems with both Castleford and Featherstone.
With regards the wooden stand following the fire at Bradford all grounds were subject to a more rigorous inspection. With regards our stand unfortunately due to its structure and the fact it had a bar underneath and it's own tunnel it was doomed. The ownership of the ground would not have changed this outcome.
To carry on a little further during the blue period in the UK and the abolishing of Metropolitan Council, Wakefield had to dispose of some of its asserts and Belle Vue was one. The Labour controlled council in order to save money sold the ground back to the club for a minimal amount. They were however not daft enough to go with the free market which was all the rage at the time and placed certain conditions that the ground could only be used as a sports facility in order to prevent its sale as building land. This was done to ensure that we always had a ground and could not be thrown out should the ground be subsequently sold to property developers.
What became of the ground ownership after this time is still somewhat shrouded in mystery, so before some of you get on about how badly we are treated by the council just remember if they weren't willing to step in many years ago a lot of you would not have a club to follow or moan about.'"
