Quote little wayne69="little wayne69"Who are you blaming for the players perceived lack of fitness, is it the players unprofessionalism or the lack of technique and application of the fitness coach?, one thing they both have in common is they are directly under the influence of the head coach, if it is the fitness coach that isn't up to it then surely the fault lies with the coach and must take responsibility for not replacing him.'"
How do you tell the difference between losing a game through lack of fitness or being beaten by a better team on the day?
To me...if you are right in a game up until the last quarter and then the other team gets well on top and open up a 3-4 score lead then I’d put that down to fitness.
There will always be points in games where players ‘appear’ to look tired if the opposition get repeat set after repeat set. A perfect example of that for me was the recent Cas/Salford game where Cas were absolutely out on their feet 10-15 minutes in...players with hands on knees, taking 2-3 tackles to get back on side and they went 18-0 behind. They showed great character to come back and win that game.
We’ve had plenty of games where we’ve had bad spells and leaked quick points but is that down to fitness? At Warrington we went toe to toe early and after about 20 minutes we were just 6-0 behind. Westerman and Arona went off and in the 20-25 minutes they were both off we’d gone from 6-0 to 24-0 down...fresh players had come on so was it fitness?
Most games we seem to finish pretty well so to me I wouldn’t be blaming fitness. Even if a few look to be carrying an extra few pounds I wouldn’t criticise them either because these are totally different circumstances to normal. They did their usual pre season and 4-5 games in would have been getting their match fitness and all of a sudden we have a 5-6 month break and come back without a pre season and to a game with different rules making it quicker. To call out any player as unprofessional for not being 100% spot on straight away is absolutely ludicrous in my opinion...there will always be players who need to play to gain match fitness...
